Hal: And, with all due respect to you Bulldogs of 1960, is it okay if I explain the translation of the word "karaoke"
to your non-Japanese speakers who may have wondered what the word means?
It sure has been talked about a lot lately.
Yes?
No?
I won't wait for permission. :-)

Karaoke = "Kara" means "empty" as in "karate" which means "empty hand" and "o ke" is the first two syllables
in the word "orchestra" the way the Japanese would pronounce it "o ke su te ra", so "karaoke" simply means
"empty orchestra" , as if the musicians aren't physically there.
That's the way I've been taught, but some of your language purists may disagree.
That's fine.
I'm always willing to learn.

And I love the way this communication thing is blossoming.
The superficial stuff is giving way to honest emotion and loving memories.
You folks really are a remarkable group of people and I do expect to see a lot of shiny cheeks in October as the
salty tears of happiness start their journey down through your makeup.

Much love,

Boyd and Jean

Sorry Gerri, Brenda... haven't reached nirvana... can't enlighten you... you'd have to ask
one of the committee members on the whys and wherefores... wasn't able to drop in
on the last committee meeting to listen in.

Gerri, I believe Dr. Gore extended the offer directly and only to female classmates... which
means they would have to be 'dakine' or 'trying real hard'... uhh, you and Jack weren't
thinking of taking up his offer... were you ?

Don't normally post links to other sites unless they're relevant to this blog... well Don Ho
and the Aliis were sure relevant to our time... thanks Gerri, enjoyed it.

Dear Brenda, you are on the money, yes this must be a super big one 60's Class Reunion.
I am not been on the committee, you need to find out which committee is handling the
entertainment part etc, who are probably open to great suggestions such as yours.
Harold, can you enlighten us.

Brenda, yes, go for it, glad to help you.
At our age, we love to hear from anyone and everyone who can input to our great cause,
there are no rules to making sure we enjoy quality fun times with family and friends
and I'm sure many will be in agreement.
It's just that we haven't seen one another in ages, although we are older it is such fun to
re-acquaint and re-bond with old friends so NO SHAME PALS we are very compassionate
and understanding.
Also no need to wait for the 75th, mini-yearly gatherings whenever possible can be on the
60th KHS class agenda, no holds barred.

This Don Ho bit is so precious, my cousin Manny was one of the Alii and this bit was from him.
Don was adorable...what great days.

Keep in touch. Gerri

Hi, Gerri,

Thanks so much for this Don Ho bit! He looked so good, didn't he?
Your friend was good to send it.

It was such fun and so beautiful being together at Kincaid's ....great choice.

I am just wondering, and I realize that after so many years of not being involved,
I may not have the ooompf or right to say anything, but why is the banquet at
some place that can't have a program or karaoke?
Just sitting around talking is great; however, 50 is the big one, isn't it?
Don't think many will make the 75th, so in my mind it can be such a blast,
with people sharing and laughter like we had at Kincaid's ....
give people a chance to share.
Bobbie, for example, thought we (us guys) could do a fun cheer from Rap's album,
where it goes something like "Okay, gangee, ...Who goin win? US !
Who goin lose? DEM 2 - 4 - 6 - ...ahhhh"
You know, something like that?
Also, remember when we did "Roll out the barrel" with hula hoops?
Wouldn't it be fun to resurrect something?
And Manny, bless his heart,....he has got to say something.........total portagee,
but precious, and his wife is a scream.

If I can help you steer this to a more alive event, I will find the time.
What are your thoughts?

Love,
Brenda

Harold and dear pals, Our Kincaid's get together was a great hit, Kincaid's is such a fun place
and accommodates us in every way.
I again suggest that if anyone is visiting in town or just want to meet that we could "hang out"
at Kincaid or another venue whenever or whatever strikes any of us who happens to be
available even at the last moment to just meet enjoy one another's company to "chew the fat"
for coffee, lunch, dinner, cocktail hour etc.
Just announce the day, time etc. and one of us will be there.
It's amazing but that is what has been happening with our ever hospitable 60's classates ever
since I set up the first MacDonald's breakfast meeting with Harold and Manny.
You never know who will show up, always some new face.
We should live our lives to the fullest and "go for it" and this is not limited to only our class but
other KHS friends etc.
Thank God for your website Harold.
Have been busy caring for my wonderful Mom so have not joined in your web, Harold.

Elsie, yes, we do miss you at these gatherings, when are u planning to visit, bring your gorgeous
jewelry creations so that we can add it to Manny's many entrepreneur talents.
Elsie did u change your email, can't seem to use the one u gave me.
Jack was unfortunately "under the weather" that night but still enjoyed himself.

I wish that I had seen Paul Texeira's drawings.
Paul, call us over next time don't be so modest, love to see them, don't keep it a secret.
Was not aware of your beautiful artwork besides your "other" Las Vegas Keno winning talent

Robert Gore, how generous you are, you rascal, would be astonished at how many would take up
your kind offer, there definitely is another side of Robert Gore that needs more exploring on our part.

Pam Machida, wow have not spoken to you since way back when you were working at the U.,
I still remember your lovely parents at your family's Kapahulu drug store.
You certainly are busy, tell me if you can fit in breakfast, coffee etc., would love to see you, email me
if it is possible otherwise I can understand your hectic schedule, wow we do go way back to the
memorable early 50's.

Manny, I know u just got started with the history of your life that night but u know we no longer have
the stamina to stay up all night to just talk, besides there are so many others who we would love
to hear from about their life philosophies, tales and such...hope to catch up with everyone on their stories.

Incidentally, went to the Side St. Inn twice this week, still have great food, prices now command much
higher prices, i.e. deep fried snapper used to be $19. or $20. but now run about $36. yummy pork chops,
garlic edamame, Korean fried rice, saimin, kal bi etc so prices may be a little rich for some of us
(yummy but) and no more mini plates.
Not to worry though, family style is what is always on tap.
I suggest that after the Pearl CC reunion for those interested late night pals that we visit Side St. Inn
for karaoke at a dollar a song.
However, if there are earlier sports games on TV, karaoke may only be available in the back room,
food is served until $10:30pm and closing is at 2:30am (I'll probably run out of gas by midnight
if not sooner if this happens).
We could just do the karaoke if it is after 10:30p for those who are game for karaoke.
Do think about this friends, the location is convenient and the back room can be reserved.
Just let me know who is interested so that we can plan on this..

Harold/Reunion Committee please count me and Jack in for the Pearl Country Club as well as 2 medallions.

Brenda, I remember the old Primo Beer it was much loved by everyone back then, but how about the,
is it 82 types of beer that is served in Belgium when you lived there, heard their beer is fantastic.
Am not a beer drinker however, whenever I visit Germany, that 's the only place I find that beer agrees
with me, yummy.

Warmest aloha to all. Gerri BD

I will call Kaimuki High School and cancel the class reunion.

I will tell Gerri and you better listen to her.
If I can't sing I will throw my Karaoke out the window.

Thanks Pearl, wil be adding Edwin, Pamela and (I'm going to guess you had a typo) Ann... already have Sandra on list.
Not being able to attend the last reunion committee meeting, I'm not aware of the details of the karaoke thing... but just
a thought-suggestion if karaoke is still being looked at... since the PCC facilities are space-limited, perhaps a pre- or
post-reunion banquet karaoke gathering might work at another venue... there are at least a couple of karaoke-themed
places nearby to PCC... one of them, HMC Karaoke, is just across Kam Hwy from the watercress farm... the KHS '61
class had a great karaoke get-together there: http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khs61karaoke ... accomodates 30 - 40 or
maybe more... open 10AM to midnight, Fri & Sat... till 10PM other nights... BYOB.

Roy, wish I could have joined you guys and Nuk... but was out of town that day.
I'll try to post the photo you sent of the group on the Pbase website: http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khs60misc

Careful what you offer, Gore... some of our classmates... OK, I won't go there.

For those still needing it, the copy of the Bulldog Reunion Bulletin response form can be found in the 12/31/09 email blog
I sent out... point to make on that... though, as I understand it, it's just to gather info on preferences for the reunions for
planning purposes, it nonetheless is important for not only the banquet committee head counts, etc, but also for all the
other various committees ( patch, medallion, cookbook, etc.) number counts... if you don't have the 12/31/09 email copy,
it's archived in the memblogs noted above... or let me know and I'll email a copy directly to you.

Thanks Chester, I'll post the Kincaid's gathering photos on the Pbase website: http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khs60misc

Carl, I'll get those yearbook senior photos scans to you as soon as, but you'll note on the Pbase website, many of those are
'marred' by classmates writing over their image... if there's any one out there who has 'unmarred' photo-images of our
classmates please pass scans of them on... you can see which ones are needed at: http://www.pbase.com/halinhi/khs60

Thanks Irene, we have the info on Diane but I didn't know about Clarence since I wasn't sure if he was a classmate... but
if he attended any class year with us, be it Intermediate, High School or whatever - he was a classmate IMHO.

Roger, although I forwarded your email directly to Manny, I thought it might be a good idea if Manny gave us that info also
on this blog.

HAPPY NEW YEAR from the reunion committee.
Just a note, whatever event is chosen is voted on by all committee members.
There are twenty (20) who are working hard for you.
It takes a lot of meetings and many suggestion to look into to get things done.
If there are any out there who would like to lend support or be on any sub-committees, please don't hesitate to give me
a call or respond via email

To the classmates who attended our small gathering at Kincaid's.
I was glad you were there to help celebrate our gathering.
It's always fun to just talk story and update each other on what's going on.
I was surprised to find that our own Paul Texeira is quite an artist.
His scenic paintings are worthy of a Picasso and he does it as a hobby in his spare time when not working or fishing.

BTW: Pamela Machida Halford is back in the islands on vacation, if you call the following a vacation (ha!)

From Pam:
"If you get a group together while I'm there, just let me know.
My saturday lunches are all full.
If we get together after work for pupus, the only day is Mondays cuz Tuesday and Thursdays I'll be picking up my grandson
and granddaughter after school,
Wednesdays is my son's night off so we go out, and Fridays is church night and I take my grandkids with me."

She will be leaving on 2/6/10.

It would be nice if we could meet somewhere to just chat and see her as she has not been to many of our reunions from
way back.

I'll be in Bangkok 01/17/10 & returning on 01/25/10 which leaves only 02/01/10 for me to attend.
However, I need not been there if someone wants to plan something.
Call me for her contact number.

Brenda: No can do on karaoke - veto'd by committee - limited space.
We all know of Manny's many talents (he and his lovely wife, Janet did the karaoke bit at our Sheraton reunion back in 2005)

Hi Hal,

Bob Nukushina arrived on Saturday the 9th with the Princess cruise line.
He was here for just a day and sailed to Kauai before heading back to California.
Wallace and I met him at Aloha Tower.
We took a quick spin to Manoa Valley hoping to find where Bob lived and played.
Bob wasn't certain where his home was; so much has changed.
He thought he spotted a tree that grew near his home.
We headed to Ala Manoa Shopping Center and Goma Tei.
While waiting for the others, Chester arrived.
We headed for the restaurant and signed in.
We talked outside while waiting to be called.
Roger showed up a few minutes later.
Lunch was enjoyable and we talked.
Bob wanted to see some art galleries and we headed for downtown.
Being Saturday and almost 4 PM, most of them were closed.
I wanted to take him to HISAM, but it just closed.
We did get into the Art Board. Mr. Moto was busy at work, but let us browse.
Dropped Bob off at the ship around 5 PM.
Too short a visit.
Tried to get Bob to commit to our class reunion(s), but he wouldn't.

Do you have the original scan of the year book pictures?
I downloaded a page from your site but found it too small to use on name tags.
I would need a copy of the original scan so I'll be able to cut and paste individual pictures and make the name tags.
I'm helping Carole on this since she is in charge decorations and name tags.
Unless you already have something setup for this purpose.

Hey, you Kolohe groupÖ. Youíre getting us all jealous with the fun you are all having at these gatherings,
especially the most recent one at Kincaidís.
Brendaís rendition of Mannyís antics can actually be pictured in oneís mind and I can even hear him
talking and being the stand up comedian that he is.
Yes, he and his group would give us much laughter.
The kind of laughter that would hurt your cheeks, hurt your stomach muscles and make permanent laugh
lines on your face.
Can we fit him into our program??

Brenda, you speak of all the wonderful people youíve met up with and I really believe that we have some
very caring and special people in our class.
You, on the other hand, have always been a wonderful person, but the years have made you an even nicer
person altogether.
I am so happy to hear that you are having such a nice experience getting to know everyone on a more

Wish and Hope we can do it again and again.
Times like that I think of all our friends from school that are not here.
That night I looked at all of you and said to my self, what have all of you done the past 50 years.
It looked like we all had a good life.
Brenda, when you ,Carol and Bobbie said that you were not afraid of dying,
I knew you all were at peace with your life.
Me and my wife feel the same.
Hope we can do it again in March, when we came back to Honolulu.
Gerri the location was great.
Learned to eat some new food.
Well I an back on the big island and doing my woods.
Brenda will call you later.
Hope all are in good health.

What an absolutely fun evening it was at Kincaid's......great company and food at great prices!
The laughter picked up as we got going, and I must say that Manny and his three wives, i.e.,
Rosalind, Janet, and Jeannette, were a blast!
Manny could do his own stand up bit, but Janet is as good as his comic sidekick, and now we
also learned that they can and do sing karaoke, even have done it professionally!!
Anyone listening?!
Program committee?
My cheeks hurt from laughing.
That babooze Manny is a hoot!
We will tell all more about his skillfully crafted lua weapons and how we will be presenting one
to the White House for our local boy President that just left.
My ohana were honored once more with providing lomilomi massage to the first family on this visit,
and if you want to see their spirit, go to youtube and choose Beyonce singing "At Last" at the
inaugural ball.....I cry every time I watch it.
They are such beautiful souls.

It was great seeing beautiful Kim come with her parents and her closeness with mom Gerri;
like sisters.
Wish I had more time to discuss beer with Kim, as she seems to think that English beer is tops.........
naahht!
She doesn't remember Primo, apparently. (smile)

Carol Andrade showed me clearly why I adored her as a friend way back when......
a very dry sense of humor, combined with a great big heart.
Bobbie Baptiste is still the sparkling eyed darling with so much softness and aloha, and I just wanted
to keep hugging her.
I felt so much sweetness in the group, and am so grateful for the connections that have expanded.
We who have lived elsewhere or got bogged down by our personal lives are so lucky to have this
opportunity to come forward to share in such joy of a special time of innocence and purity and
lasting friendships.

Point of clarification: Robert Gore knew of our gathering and called IN from Seattle to touch base
and share in the aloha and start his entry into his happy Kaimuki past.
He will be attending our reunion and holds his time in Hawaii as a pivotal point in his life.
He had fun speaking with a few classmates, and also got a sense of the joyful loudness and humor
of our Kincaid 's gathering.
Manny was incorrigible with his "Tell him this, tell him that!"
Got to get these two together in April.
We should all wear our Depends, though.

Well, that's all I have to say today.
It just gets better.
Thanks again to Gerri for coming up with the great idea of Kincaid's.
Also, Gerri ... call me at your convenience for our Maunalani visit, okay?

Happiest of New Year wishes for all. Brenda

Great tasty well presented appetizers i.e. hot brie w/sauce and yummy bread, crispy calamari, sweet potato fries,
the combination plate, dessert, many more, etc., Kincaid's has really improved on their appetizers
(dinner was also available).
Brought my daughter, Kim, who is visiting from London who enjoyed us old folks.
Our visiting classmate, Manny was at his best presiding over us all with Jan, his wife at his side and his interesting
tales of the past, Manny leaves for Hilo in a few days.
Most arrived before 5p which is fine (happy hour is 4-7pm) with half price drinks and pupus.
FYI, Kincaid's happy hour program has changed as of today to 3pm-7pm and as in most cases Kincaid's also changed
the prices to: $4.00 well drinks and selected beers, $5.00 specialty cocktails and house wine, and $6.00 for selected
appetizers, so we unknowingly enoyed a great deal for our Manny's gathering.
Along with Manny, Jan, there was Roger Kobayashi, Chester Otani who was kind enough to bring our super organized
school pictures to see how cute we once all looked like, Frances Mise, Marjorie, Sandy Akiyama, Pearl, Brenda Ignacio,
Bobbie Hanoa and Caroline Andrade, don't think I missed anyone.
We all took turns and had a nice chat with Robert Gore over the telephone, believe Brenda called him in Seattle.
Also Paul and Miki Texeira came in later, it was perfect that we had a separate upstairs area all to ourselves away from
the others downstairs .
Manny's wife had a good looking purse/bag from Hilo which we all loved and inquired about and lo and behold,
Manny had a bunch of these such bags in his car so convenient and well prepared for impromptu buyers some of us
bought a bag and placed future orders with Manny.
Manny also brought some of his beautiful Hawaiian weapons to show us, very impressive, it was a special evening,
Jack works early so we left about 8:30p or so, the bar area closes at 11pm.
On my way out, Caroline Andrade asked me why the change to the Pearl Country Club for what I assume she was asking
about the April reunion.
I have absolutely no clue whatsoever, however, if anyone, Harold, Yasuda, etc. know what the story is about this,
please tell us.
Again, all the very best to all, till then, malama pono.

Hi Hal,

I'm slowly beginning to remember classmates, etc. after seeing that 5th grade Waialae Elementary School picture.
Thanks for reminding me that the teacher was Mrs. Lee - thought it was her but wasn't sure until you mentioned it.

Sandra Akiyama Fasone, Frances Mise Shinjo, Margie Morimoto Miura, Manny Mattos and his wife, Pearl Shimooka Mori,
Chester Otani and Caroline Andrade were there before I arrived.
Geri and Jack Digman and daughter Kimberly; Brenda Ignacio; Bobbie Hanoa and Paul Texeira and his wife showed up
a little later.
I think that accounts for everybody.

Aloha Hal!
Thank you again for keeping these emails going...it's been wonderful reading about all the "doings" of everyone
these past 50 years.
Hope to be more involved now that the holidays are over.
Please add Sandra Kimura Rongitsch to the list.
May 2010 be filled with blessings and peace for all of us!

Sandy A., Carol H., great you were able to visit Sandy I. on Christmas eve...
I'm sure she must've really appreciated it.

Pearl C., I'm crushed... you don't remember me... but I guess that's OK since you didn't remember our teacher
either... that would've been Mrs. Lee
Good reminder to every one else... there are links to all the photos and blogs on this page on the Pbase website:

http://www.pbase..com/halinhi/khs60lv02

Another good reminder... like Clarence, don't see a problem with still submitting a response to the Bulldog Bulletin.
As I've mentioned before, I'm sure the reunion committee will let us-me know when it actually is no longer necessary,
probably sometime after this Thursday's meeting when they'll likely send out a second and more detailed form based
on the reponses from the first Bulletin form.

Hi Harold,

Carol Hamasaki Morikawa and I went to visit Sandy Ishimoto Dec 24th and she was in good spirits (considering).
We had lunch and spent some quality time with her out on the lanai.
Thatís the first time Iíve been to Maunalani.
The view is breathtaking.

Raynor, deepest condolences on your nephew.
So young, so tragic.
Hope your sister and niece are doing ok and that this new year will bring some peace.

The best of good wishes to all of you in 2010!

Aloha,

Hi Hal,

I'm sorry I can't seem to remember you being a 5th grade classmate of mine at Waialae Elementary School.
My husband and I just returned last night at 5:15 p.m. from Las Vegas where we went to spend the New Year
like we've been doing for the past few years.
Kiki and I usually have dinner together with our husbands when we're there but this time I also had the opportunity
to have Elsie join Carolyn and I for lunch which was a rather long one I must admit.
My husband Hiram is a McKinley High School graduate but seems to know a few of our high classmates through construction
where he was an electrician - retired in 1998.
Here are some of them that he knows Don Hiura (deceased), Thomas Noguchi, Gordon Tam - maybe more.

Subject: Re Dec 31 Headcount for Reunion-2010

Pearl/Hal,

Happy New Year--Year of the Tiger!
I appreciate all that you all are doing on the reunion committee and Hal's blog.
It takes a tremendous amount of time and energy.

My late response; I am not 100% certain we (spouse and I) can attend preferably in April in HI, let's say better than 50-50.
My approximate counts and info added to the bulletin.

Clarence

January 2, 2010

Man, that felt weird... typing 2010... same as when 2000 rolled around.

Posting your Bulletin response-request Betty (Violet)... I'm guessing it's not a problem to do so now.
Actually, I think the reunion committee would probably welcome continuing input to that initial bulletin, as I believe
it was sent out to get a better feel for final planning and details... i.e. numbers for cookbooks, travel & hotel packages,
golfing, medallions and of course banquet attendees... since reservations-orders will likely have to made well in advance
for most of these.
So I'm going to go out on that proverbial limb and say yes to all who haven't done so as yet... go ahead and still send in your
Bulletin response, but ASAP... the committee will probably let me-us know when it's finally too late : )
The January 31st date may be a definite deadline for cookbook recipe submissions though, what with compilation, printing,
binding and other scheduling considerations.

A heads-up... though I'll still be able to receive your email blog posts, I probably won't be able to send the blogs out via my
hawaii.rr.com email address for a while... so don't be concerned if you receive email from 'halinhi' via maybe Yahoo or
maybe Hotmail, or even maybe 'halinhi808' via Gmail... the blogs may come by less frequently but they're still from me.

Hal,

Would you pass along this information to Pearl -- I know this information is late, however, hopefully I can still do this.
I would like to purchase a cookbook.
I see the deadline for submitting recipes is January 31st; I would like to submit a recipe or two and will have it to Pearl
before the deadline.

Thank you!!

Hauoli makahiki hou Harold and dear fellow classmates, hope everyone is enjoying this wonderful long holiday weekend
with loved ones and dear friends as well as looking forward to an incredibly grand 2010 along with good health,
much happiness, prosperity and success in whatever endeavors we seek plus many more conversations and good times
together with our classmates.

Our Tuesday paina is just around the corner and there are additonal suggestions for side st inn, zippy's, big city diner,
ground floor etc. which is great.
With this short lead time, we will opt for Kincaid's at Ward Warehouse at 5pm on, second floor, Ewa side, and parking is free.
The good news is, is that Manny is returning for a March visit so we will have more time to work on other venues as well for
any of our other KHS class of 60's visiting luminaries.
See everyone on Tuesday at Kincaids.
New Year's blessing to you and yours. Gerri DB
