Viking sword (Peterson S) with interlace decoration on guard.
11-FEB-2012

Viking sword (Peterson S) with interlace decoration on guard.

Wheeler type III/Peterson type S pommel, cast as a hollow copper-alloy fitting. The hollow underside would have accepted the fittings for the grip. As Hammond (2010, Fig.1.8.3-h) puts it: "The blade's tang would have passed through all the hilt components to emerge at the top of the pommel where it is hammered flat to secure the grip. The iron blade of this sword has not survived well, but the pommel and interlace-decorated guard are in good shape.
