OUT OF AFRICA

I was born in Africa, in a little town by the name of Lourenço Marques, situated in the ex-Portuguese Province of Mozambique, east Africa, by the Indic Ocean. After its independance and a few decades after my departure I went back there to return to my rootes and visit the places of my youth. I found a new city, now called Maputo, a country with different people and some new traditions and customs, but the magic of the place was still there!......my heart bursted into JOY to find MY AFRICA again......

Hi Helena, I've just returned from a trip to Maputo, my first. What a great experience! Beautiful people and a beautiful city, though in urgent need of some tender loving care. I fervently hope that the state (perhaps in partnership with private investors) will find the will and the resources to restore the Botanical Gardens, the spectacular marine esplanade, the roads and pavements, the schools and civic buildings, to their fomer glory. Hi Helena. I was born in LM, in the 1948, and the school you show was called João Belo, and it was only for boys. For girls was the one next to it (D.Leonor de Sá Sepulveda) I´ve beeen there and I still love it as it was today.

Hi Helena...I was born in LM and lived there from 1959 until 1976. Unfortunately haven't had the chance to go back since but I hope to one day...I miss it so much as well as so many of the friends I grew up with. Nice to see this site for 1st time. I also lived at Lourenço Marques, and sometimes i come back to se my Mother who still lives there! On early 2008 i will be there once again., and who knows if will be to check possibilies of my return!! Bem Hajam

Hi Helena, Viva LM / Maputo!! I grew up here and in Beira between 1952 and 1964 and visited last New Year for the fist time in over 30 years. Like you, I can only say it felt so good to be back. The atmosphere and the people are just terrific! Great photos, muito obrigado, Chris
