If it is all black, it is most likely not a Steller's Jay. It could be a Phainopepla...

I observed a ?? Steller's Jay?? in neighbors tree last week (03/12/09). The bird was complety black except for some lighter tail feathers. It also had bright RED eyes. The top notch feathers were simiular, but were a defined 3 single feather orentation. (much like a cockateal) No blue was apparent. WAS IT A STELLAR JAY???
