I purchased a lot of CorrectDeck to cover our new deck and front porch in the spring of 2005. Within the first year it discolored and faded in such an odd way. I attempted to clean it with a very mild car wash detergent and a soft bristled brush. I also rinsed it regularly and kept the deck very clean from snow and dirt. After I cleaned the deck with a scrubbing it looked better, but not great. Then the nasty stains came back within weeks. The following year I called CorrectDeck and explained what happened and told them I wanted it looked at. The customer service agent proceeded to tell me it was mold and it needed to be treated. Now this "Maintenance Free" or "Low Maintenance" deck as I was told by the sales rep when I purchased it at Hammond Lumber needs to be washed with a special agent and treated for mold regularly. So I started researching the problem and found over 150 posts on Bob Vila's forum of people having the same problems. Also getting the run around from CorrectDeck. This is just one source from one simple search! The talk now is class action law suit and I am in the process of filing a claim with the Attorney General of the State of Maine. We as consumers are very well protected and have a great Consumer Law Guide here in Maine. I work hard for my money and dont need to be sold low quality products that are EXPENSIVE and said to be maintenance free at the time of purchase, NOW the tune has changed since all the problems have started and been reported.

Purchased 1030 ft. in2008 did not find all the complaints then but wow they are here now have all the same problems listed 10yrs later Haven't been able to get any results from the Sawtooth Lumber Co. Grand Marias Mn. If any class action Law suits planned let me know.

We have a massive 3 level deck and chose Correctdeck because it was the best color combination for our needs replacing woods decks. I join the crowd on this product being a poor representation. 60% wood and 40% poly should not do what this did. This last week I fell through the deck as the grooves that are held in places with the plastic spaces failed. My installer came out 4 times trying to make this right. Folks the talk of a class action suit is pointless as this company file bankrupcy. Doesn't that tell you something about how poor a product this is? Huh mistake on my part. I am seriously looking for caulking that is the same color and we have a couple of touch up tubes of stuff that matches the deck but there are so many other problems that is will not do much. Am I the only one that is getting this stuff absorbing water? I have had to cut expansion joints in the lengths of CD and the width has swelled so much that CD is pushing against CD bowing the boards up and down. I have spent a lot of money, a lot of money emphased again for this crap. I am now spending my time to pull boards up trim them and try to get them to look better since the CD swelling really detracts from the look around the pool. We live in both Florida and Ohio and I had plenty of time to study composite decks in Florida. Trex was to be avoided since it actually sagged there and the smell of plastic outgassing as the temperatures went up was pretty strong. Wishing we had done Trex now. I am seriously considering having a paint store match some expoy paint and coat the surace with expoy paint. I am thinking I would have to put the abrasive sand particles in it to keep from making it too slippery. Love to hear if anyone has done this. Best of luck to us all.

Man, the stories are endless, unfortunately. I installed it in 2006 and the mold showed up two years later. I assume it took a while because we live in a very dry climate, Colorado, so I am really frustrated that mold is the issue. I have not tried to clean it yet, but will, and was hoping I could find something to seal it but haven't found anything yet. It looks like I am just another victim.

We are CorrectDeck victims from 2005. Same story as everyone below. The only thing that will keep the mold down is regular applications of very strong bleach but it comes right back. Don't bother with the Moldex applicator because it seals in the mold which is coming from inside the product. Did anything ever happen with the class action law suit? Has anyone tried staining or painting CorrectDeck and how did it hold up?

I purchased Correct Deck 5years ago worst mistake I have ever made . Mold and stains .have tried all the products that the company recommended to no avail just more expense . Maintence free rubbish. Not good enough .

We purchased the deck in 05/17/06 and it is falling apart. I have made hundreds of phone calls to try and get a warranty claim in our decking. No luck so far. It makes us sick to think of the money we spent on this deck. If anyone knows of a law suit against htem please let us know. We added on to our deck 6 months ago and bought some of this decking that looks exactly the same as the one we bought 5 years ago so they are still selling it.

What concentration of the Oxalic Acid and Bleach did you use to clean your deck ? I've tried everything but the mold always comes back, your solution of sealing with Sikkens may be the only alternative,

CorrectDeck is boondoggle - had massive mold 2 years after installation and we live in a very dry climate. Southern Alberta, Canada. Tried everything - what finally worked was pressure washing followed by vigorously brushing with oxalic acid to remove the embedded stains, more pressure washing, brushing with strong bleach to kill the mold, more pressure washing followed by refinishing with Sikkens Cetol acrylic semi-transparent stain. Has held up well for 3 years.

They filed for being losers and making a huge mistake and the "new" same company is not liable for their fail. just spread the word and let them know that Correct Deck and DuraLife Siesta are a horrible company and should be forced to be shut down. my deck has turned to dust. This stuff was VERY expensive and was the answer to all the composite problems my friends and builders' problems. I have tried to was it with warm water soas no to give them any excuse to viod the warranty, but I am worried that the dust (so much) may be toxic. Any ideas?

My CorrectDeck is not only moldy, but has started to flake. When you walk out and then walk back in there are flakes of the decking all over your shoes. Probably won't last much longer.

When I think of the money that I have invested in my deck, it makes me want to cry. It's only 3 years old and it's such an embarrassment to me. Every year it looks worse and worse. Boards have changed colors, spotting overall and the fascia board all warped. My husband and I are so disgusted. We called the lumber company where it was purchased and they were no help at all. They gave us a phone # to call and no one ever called us back after we left messages. I understand that the company went chapter 11, but they should be held responsible for the shoddy material that they accepted a lot of money for...I cannot express how disappointed we are in this unfortunate situation. All I can say is shame on you Correct Deck and in good concience (if you have one) Do the right thing!!!!!

We too have the same ugly problem. Would love to be part of a class action suit. We live in Northeast PA. This product has been misrepresented and is more time-consuming and costly to maintain than wood and it looks terrible. Very embarrassing to use with company. The more you treat it the worse the mold appears to return. Where's the guarantee?

I too, am a victim of this misrepresentation of "maintenance-free" "hassell-free" decking! This product is a NIGHTMARE! I am beyond aggravated with my deck that is 4 years old that looks disgusting. I am embarrassed to have people come to our home and use our deck! Is there anything we can do? I have tried cleaner, but it's not good enough. It may lighten the mold stains, but they are still there. All I want is a nice deck that I paid for!!!

I am a contractor along midcoast Maine. When correct deck first came out I used it on my own house before I started recomending it to others, needless to say I never used this product again or recommended it to customers. Along with the problems TREX had I steered away from any type of composite decking for many years. I would love to hold this company responsible for their negligence and poor quality product. If a class action suit is in the works please sign me up!

What Correctdeck type did you guys use? Is it the older Natural grain line? Is the Correctdeck CX (DuraLife Siesta) line with hardwood chips and surface capping going to be better? Interested in your experience and feedback. It is hard to get any contractor to use Ipe here in Arkansas.

We have had our deck for about three years and the mold is horrible. No matter what you use it doesn't help. Correct Deck should be put out of business once and for all. Used so many products I'm afraid the deck will decinegrate. Any suggestions for this ugly stuff?

We also have this horrible product as a deck that looked good when it was new, but then within the year it stained horribly with huge black spots. Have had it cleaned and power washed twice at great expense, but the spots just keep coming back. It is ugly, and I wish I never heard of this product. The company blames everything except an inferior product. What a waste of money. This company and its representatives should be ashamed and in jail for misleading customers who trusted their product.

We are in Perth W. Australia and we have the same staining problem as you people above. We are about to seal it with the Clear Maisonary sealer ,not to camouflage the black spots (because we can NOT get rid of them) but just to stop the anormous dust coming from the deck, and hopefuly to stop the accdental stain from our red wino. Or maybe we should stain the whole deck in our red wino to camouflag the mould spots...ha,ha.I was sugesting to my husband to paint the deck soon as we installed it, but he refused, as he bought it as a maintenance free product. Has anyone painted or sealed it before while was still new ????

02-01-11 I feel so bad for everyone who were bamboozled into buying this crappy product. My wife and I were in the beginning stages of researching decks and this is what we discovered. We have decided to avoid decks all together and look into stamped cement patio. Staying away from wood and composites decks....waste of time, money and heartache! I can't believe Consumers Reports rated Correct Deck Top in its category. Just checked online 01-31-11. Now I'm questioning the intergrity of Comsumers Reports!!!! How in the hell did they missed this? Or did they? Did they really research decking....I wonder. Best of luck everyone with Class Action Suits!

I have the same problem and did report it to the Attorney General office in Maine. The best they said they could do is give me some of their left over decking in 2 colors that would not match the railing and they would not replace the railing and posts. They also expected me to pay to have a new deck built. Why should I have to pay twice for a deck? I am not accepting the offer I want a new deck or my money back but not sure what will happen.

It was just installed only 2 months ago! It has direct sunlight so I don't understand the mold. What a great disappointment! I would of been better off with treated lumber. I just called to file claim today but after reading all the posts I don't feel very hopeful.

I am puzzled by this as well. It appears to be mold. However, my deck faces south and gets full sun. The worst of the spotting appears to be where there is no sun protection at all. Under my BBQ pad, where water cannot dry out, there is no mold at all. Nor is there any on the underside of the decking. Seems those areas would be worse.

G Loesche Thought this was the cedar deck solution,wrong.Same problems as everyone else,black mold. You can clean it with a bleach solution with lasts for a month or two and the little black bastards are back. Looking for something that will seal the deck and prevent the mold from coming back. Does this happen the the CX? Have the deck on our lake home in northern wisconsin. Lots of money spent.Looked good when new. Can't afford to replace it with a differnet product. Does this happen to other composite decking?

This decking was recommended over Trex by my cousin who builds high end decking and landscapes. We keep it clean, treated it as they recommended, used a new stain they suggested and now it's worse than ever! Mold spots everywhere and this deck has western exposure so plenty of afternoon sun. Certainly isn't worry free. It's ugly! This was an extra expense over treated lumber and now my husband is threatening to pull it up and lay down treated! Anyone in Indiana thinking of suing? I have too much time and money invested in this.

Was told by the Lumber Yard Sales person this was the best to use "worth the additional cost". Within 3 months mold spots appeared. To clean the deck requires hours of scrubing and mold spots appear right away. The deck is awful looking and this is an expensive product that never lived up to its claim.

I have the same problems as all of you. Being in Indiana weather can be bad also, but was told that this was no maintenance and we used it because of retiring soon and not wanting so much upkeep. We have messed around with this terrible stuff for years, no answers available. We were talking today of tearing it off and putting in a cedar deck. We had this deck at our previous house and loved it. Made a big mistake using this inferior product. I would like to be in an action suit. If they went bankrupt there really would be noone to sue. That is why they got out of town. We are all scammed with guarantees, etc. and our money is gone.

Same problem on my vacation home deck in Wells, Maine. About 500 sq ft deck placed about 4 years ago. Mold every year requiring bleach and power washing. At best, get temporary relief from mold spots although some are permanent. Also get faded deck. So much for my low maintenance deck. Thought this was just my problem til I started doing web search. We have the same complaint. A Correct Deck we spent a small fortune on in 2003 covered with black spots. We have actually had guests ask us what is wrong with our deck! The cleaners do little more than bleach out the color of the deck making it look worse. Makes me ill every time I look at it.

I am also having the same problems as in the above comments. My deck was installed approximately 2 years ago and it is so unsightly. I'm also embarrassed to have friends and family over to use it. The black spots and discoloring is unacceptable. I also have attempted to wash it to no avail. Please count me in any any on any way to recoup this investment. This is in Massachuetts, I do have 3 boards of this decking product that has not been affected, so I know it is a problem with the product.

Has anyone had problems with the Correct Deck rails? We own a home (and deck, built in 2008) in New Hampshire. Apparently, water collected inside the bottom rails, froze and subsequent expansion caused splitting of the composite material. We have brought this to the attention of the building supplier from whom we purchased the Correct Deck product and have also met with the company representative who sold the material to the building supplier. In the meantime, Correct Deck has declared bankrupsy and its assets have been purchased by GAF. I was offered a $500 settlement to take or leave, as I was told the company had purchased the Correct Deck assets--not its liabilities. Clearly, the cost to replace the rails with ones with more weep holes to allow for drainage, will be much more than the amount offered. I am sharing my information with my lawyer and hope to have an idea as to the options open to me to address this issue fairly. If you have had any problems such as the one I describe above, please post them here. Thank you.

Im tired of the run around, sue the company , for what the decking cost this is unacceptable. they say "everything molds" well my decking is correct deck and it molds like crazy , my railing is cedar with latex stain. Guess what the wood has NEVER had a spot on it. ?.? wish i could say the same about the decking

Same stains as everyone describes. Decking installed 09/07 and dark spots started to appear the following summer. Attempted to clean with many products without success. Power washing at 1100 PSI provides only short term benefits and there is always the concern of breaking the adhesive bonds of the top layer with this method. Any recourse with BMCA after the acquisition?

I agree! We have had our deck for 3 yrs. Last year we scrubbed it and pressure washed it. It looked good for about 2 days and the ugly black spots appeared. Frustrated, we left it alone until the spring. I started researching online at Correct Deck's website. They recommended Moldex Deck Cleaner and Protector. I purchased both. Spent about $110. I bought the protector that had the color rejuvenator added because the deck had faded so bad. We spent one whole day cleaning it and 2-3 days applying the color protector (which had to be painted on with a brush in order to get good coverage). Well guess what?? In less than a month's time, the black spots are back! According to the literature on the Moldex Deck Protector website, if you use both their cleaner and protector, there is a 4 year guanantee that the deck will resist, mold, mildew and algae! So now what do I do? Contact Moldex or Correct Deck? I'm sure they will blame each other. And they will most likely say it isn't mold, mildew or algae. Honestly, I'm not sure that it is. I think it is coming from the crap they used in manufacturing the composite boards. If they would just pay for the treated lumber to replace my deck I would be thrilled. I don't ever want to see another piece of this garbage again. I am like many of you. I am ashamed of this deck and frustrated with my own decision to spend the money for something we thought would be maintenance free. What good does it do to spends 100's of thousands of dollars to build a dream home and then stick this junk on your house. The salesmen who sold this stuff and the representatives from CorrectDeck who pushed it off on distributers should all be "horsewhipped"! I for a lawsuit, but don't know where to begin. If there is anything in the works, please let me know!!

We had a "Correct Deck" installed in 9/2003. I contacted Correct Deck in the Spring of 2004 because the deck faded from a beautiful redwood color to an awful PINK color. It also has mold spots as well as some other mysterious spots. After numerous phone calls and complaint forms, a representative finally came to our home to look at this deck... 4 YEARS LATER!!! In the meanwhile we were provided with "Deck Defender" (a mold inhibitor) and deck cleans at NO Charge. The problem is none of them worded and the "maintence free" deck became "VERY HIGH MAINTENANCE". Plus the fact our deck faded to pink, not "an attractive, wood like lighter coler, like it stated in the pamphlet. Another problem we are having is splintering. Last summer in an effort to help us with the fading, "Correct Deck" provided us with a COLOR ENHANCER that was supposed to bring the deck back to its original color at No Charge! It had taken years to formulate, should NEVER fade and was tested in all weather conditions and was to last at least 10 years! We spent most of the summer applying this product on our deck, only to learn that there was an error when the formulated the color and it ended up being orange!! It also scratched off and came off on the soles of our shoes. When I contacted Correct Deck this year about my problem, they advised me that they are no longer offering this product. Now for the past 6 weekends I have been power washing off the product because the deck looked like garbage. Now it's back to being PINK!!!! Now when I call I get a C/S rep that is clueless. I am never able to speak with Kelly Boyton and the top guy Roger Cote is no longer with the company. Now what. Class action lawsuit here we come!!! Margaret

Hey guys, I don't have to write much: EXACT experiences of you all. 2,200 sq ft of overpriced composite deck w/ lovely black mold, no charge! Sonia advised me it contains a whopping 60% of wood fibre. Check out other suckers on Bob Vila's blog. Does anybody know how to do a major blog so if a prospective customer oogle CorrectDeck, all our legitimate complaints show up? I purchased Correct Deck in 2005 and have been getting the runaround since 2007, no one ever returns a phone call, they sent me a camera and a questioner, to fill out I sent it in last summer 2008, and still nothing , my last attempt to get this resolved was when I spoke to a Sonia on 6-15-09 and she said she would call me back in a couple of days , and that she had no idea what was going on with there product......It seems that all of Correct Decks employees were coached to act stupid , if you check the web under Correct Deck you can see that this company screwed hundreds of people and stole hundreds of thousands of our money ....Anyone who got screw should join the lawsuit

I am appalled at all the problems everyoneo is having. I too have the black spots and feel cheated. My contractor is going to look at it but I dont know what is going to be done. Lots of money and to have to live with that mess is not right at all.

Robin Shields OUr deck is alful. I have pictures to prove it. It is totally alful that a product like this was sold to a consumer. A painter told me this would happen and when I questioned it they said no way. That would never happen. They are black spots that are all over the deck.

We have the same problem!!! Our deck is 4 years old and looks terrible. the spots came back worse this year after using their cleaning product and preventative solution. This production is NOT maintenance free!!! Count us in on any "class action" suits. I would NOT recommend this product to anyone!!!

Unfortunately, I read all the rave reviews about this product - and heard a great sales pitch from our salesman - and believed all of it! I feel totally used now and embarrassed that this product is part of my lovely home. I have spent a lot of money to create a beautiful new deck (to be enjoyed by family and friends) and I don't want anyone to come over! I think it is despicable that Correctdeck refuses to accept responsibility for their product and now blames the "environment" for the mold and mildew issues. This is wrong! I also got the same runaround dealing with them and they told us to use the cleaner. Well, we did and the spots came back even more! It was not "maintenance free" and it took a lot of hard work to scrub and clean it and it STILL didn't remove the spots. It looks horrible! I refuse to accept this and am going to fight to have them fix this!

We installed Correct Deck in June of 2007. That first summer it looked great. By the next summer the dreaded "spots" appeared. We thought it was oil or something but we don't grill on the deck. Then the spots increased and got darker. So much for low maintenace. We washed the deck, but the spots returned. We called the contractor who intalled the deck and he said he installed a deck for his brother at the same time as ours and he was having the same problem. Here we are now, May 2009 and our beautiful deck looks absolutely disgusting. I spoke with the contractor again and he said Correct Deck had so many complaints they came out with a Correct Deck Wash and Sealer. Has anyone used this stuff? Also has anyone had any luck getting a representative to come out and look at the problems? Count us in on any "Suits". We waited a long time for a deck and don't have the $ money to replace it. Luckily we only used it on the deck & stairs and not the railings.

Larry Lagace I have the same experience in Up State New York with a new home we built four years ago. After the first year it looks very unsightly. I have a small fortune invested in the decking and railing system.

We have the same problem here in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. Several of us here have used it our our boat docks and are considering replacing it now. Has anyone stained over the black splotches?? Nothing seems to clean it.

If my Correct Deck starts warping and cracking like in the earlier post, I am going to have it torn down. I've had as much as I can stand just with the dingey look and the black spots from mildewing. I have taken care of cedar siding and decking for many years and never had to do maintenance more than once every three years to keep it all looking new. Annapolis, MD is a wetter climate but this mildew problem is not plaguing my neighbors with wood decks.

Amen! We have had the same problems since day one! Unfortunately we spent about $30,000 for our deck that also appears on their wesite. I HATE this product. I only entertain close family and friends because of my embarrassment with my deck. It has warped, cracked stained horribly and I can't keep any outdoor furniture on it because of the staining. The deck is only 2 years old!!!! I also emailed Renae Provencher at Correct Deck and have not received a response. We live in Long Island, NY and thought it was just us having this problem. Count us in on any lawsuits. It is a disgrace that they state this product is maintence free!!! They are crooks.
