The Enchantment Lakes - Leavenworth, WA 8.17.2002

"This was the most fun I've ever had!" - Leah Jurek. Leah made sure everyone knew that, and what a great way to celebrate Scott & Leah's 6th anniversary, with Charlie & me tagging along. The route we took starts at the Snow Lakes trailhead, at 1,600 ft., and climbs continuously, encountering many lakes and rugged crags, to Aasgard Pass, at 7,750 ft. The route then descends down Aasgard Pass, along the stunning blue-green Colchuck Lake and down to the Stuart-Colchuck Lake trailhead. The 2,200 ft. descent down Aasgard was...umm...challenging. We were either running on small rocks that slide under our feet like marbles or hopping large boulders, some more wobbly than others. The "100 hikes in the Alpine Lakes" book describes Aasgard as, "For hikers lacking climbing equipment and training it's a route silly to the point of suicidal." After the run we soaked our legs in the river and ate dinner in Leavenworth. When we got back to Seattle at around 11:00 pm, the celebration continued with ice cream at Madison Market. That was enough for me. Who knows what else happened after that, but I'm sure it'll be an anniversary they'll never forget. Thanks for letting me share it with you! -- Glenn
