Lew Arrington's "Brutus" Mustang funny cars were some of the most popular on the tour in the early 1970's. The black primer over the hood was evidence of a recent fire/engine explosion and repair. This happened a lot back in the day and was the reason for the full face fireproof mask, breathers and goggles on the driver (visible in this photo). The cars were great to watch - fast, fun and exciting, but dangerous and more and more expensive to run. This and the growing amount of engine maintenance to run the cars prompted Lew and some others to build jet powered cars.
