Echidna or Spiny Anteater

This little mammal paid us a visit. They lay a single egg which is deposited into a pouch. It hatches in 10 days, and the baby, about the size of a jellybean, is hairless. The mother has no nipples and milk for the baby exudes through pores in the mother's skin. The baby leaves the pouch at about 2 - 3 months when it grows spines, and is then kept in a burrow, where they continue to be fed until about 6 months old. Their diet is mainly ants and termites, but will eat grubs, larvae and worms.
