Today, the Parachute Regiment paraded though Colchester, with Fixed Bayonets. This in accordance with the century's old tradition of having received the Freedom of the Borough.

Thousands of people cheered, clapped and shouted their support as 16 Air Assault Brigade exercised the Freedom of the Borough of Colchester.

With flags flying, young and old lined Colchester High Street to welcome the soldiers back after their six-month tour of Afghanistan.

The salute was taken at the town hall by Lord Lieutenant of Essex, Lord Petre, Colchester Mayor Helen Chuah and Brigadier James Chiswell, who led the recent operations.

There was barely any space to move near the town hall as well-wishers packed into the street
