How did I learn to become a Photographer?
I learned how to take pictures by working for several local professional photographers as their assistant, learning on the job, and by self-teaching through the aid of critique. Other than that, I have been refining my skills with a series of projects that I gain knowledge from, and apply what I've learned to commercial shoots.
My Hat is off to you ... I followed the same road from 1978-2008.. The last pro digi camera I bought and still have on the floor next to my desk is a fugi S3. I have an S2 which was the biggest mistake of my live,it was one of the "black screen of death" cameras that fugi fixed the first time.... then it died agin.. still dead/2015... bought the S3 because I had a wedding on the next week end after it died the first time. I finished with the S1, My first "Pro Digi" camera. I got remarried, slowed down, sold my 4x5 Horseman, all my Hasselblads and Nikon film bodies. Still sitting on $80-100 grand of studio lighting and color darkroom equipment that nobody wants. Paid $600 for the first copy of photoshop and picked it up on 9-11. I sat at the camera shop for 2 hours and watched the news with the staff and the son of the owner.(he runs the place now). I have done all spectrums of weddings from 2 daughters of the CEO of Sunmark Corp. (think Sweettarts candy) to VFW wedding held at the Hall, (they made you wait out in the parking lot while the took down the alter and put up the tables). Had a Great time! My record was 93 weddings from Jan-Dec 1989. 62 of my own 23 for the guy that laid me off the year before (after he had a fire that gutted one of his studios). I was no longer working for him but still had to finish the "Requested" Weddings that he charged an extra $200 to the Brides who wanted me to show up...This was how we parted as friends. the other 8 weddings were from all the other photographers in my area who need a Last minute replacement for one reason or another. Oh Well... I'm 60 now and like the guy I studied under "Big Daddy Don Blare" once said to me at Winona School of pro photographry back before it was moved from lake Winona IN. to thepoeplesrepublicofchicago......."You are young now. so always remember the "ladies" who help to make the great images That you are here paying me a lot of money to learn how to do it right. Because when your my age you have to stand back and direct younger photographers, because they will work with the "Ladies" and all you will be left with is the $ like Me. And "Ladies" are warm and money is not"
