Gold was discovered in 1859 & 1860 in Idaho Springs, Central City, Georgetown, Silver Plume and Leadville. There were small towns around these towns. Between 1870 and 1880 many other mining towns were created, such as; Creede, Silverton, Ouray, Lake City and Tellrude. The infant mining area was Cripple Creek-Victor. The area had been prospected from 1871, but nothing was ever found.
around 1890 gold was finally discovered in the Cripple Creek area.
It has been 148 years since the initial discoveries were made. It is amazing how many old mines have stood up during this period.
Gold was the main discovery, then silver was discovered.
I hope that you enjoy these current images from the Colorado Mining past.
