PU'UHONUA O HONAUNAU SERIES

Sometimes an ancient place calls for a an "ancient" technique in capturing it.
Even if a digital imitation, I enjoy the process of choosing lenses and films before
the shot, of composing on the fly, of living and learning with the results, of making
adjustments in the field rather than with post-processing. It harkens back to analogue
days, the element of surprise, and the excitement of seeing what develops, especially
if a bit of serendipity comes to play, and that simpler, cruder, toy instrument seems
to capture the essence of a place better than the hi-tech wonder hanging off my other shoulder...

The ancient place is Pu'uhonua O Honaunau, also known as City of Refuge. For 35 years it
has been my place of refuge, a place to walk, a place to swim, a place to fill my soul
and feel the spirit of ancient yet timeless ways... A place to create.
