Coyote at Benjies Lake Trail

Cabot Trail, Cape Breton - Nova Scotia

Some guy who should have known better was feeding this coyote by the side of the road next to one of the hiking trails. The next day, the warden had to close the hiking trail because the coyote became aggressive toward some of the hikers. The warden thinks the aggressive behaviour was likely the result of people feeding it and the animal quickly associated people, hikers in this case, as a source of food. Also, it is illegal to feed wild animals along the part of the Cabot Trail which runs through Cape Breton Highlands National Park. And now you know why. The warden had to actually go after this coyote. A shot was fired at it but no trace of the coyote was ever found.

The coyote found in Nova Scotia is a hardier breed than ones found elsewhere. See this link. http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/wildlife/conserva/07-04-6.htm

This is such a beautiful picture. It's a shame that people think they can feed these animals like common household pets, because the animal only gets hurt or killed in the end. Or worse, people get hurt. Coyote attacks have become common in Cape Breton, one resulting in a death.

This is beautifully detailed. I see not with kit lens though!

Thanks. They never did find the body so it probably is still alive somewhere in the area but just a bit gun-shy now. The park warden said if it were hit there would have been maybe traces of blood but none was found. The characteristic signs accompanying a dead carcass like birds buzzing overhead was also absent.

Thanks shadepuppy. Yes, I'm happy with the detail and was fortunate to catch it in such a natural setting too. I caught this guy at the edge of the woods near the Benjies Lake Trail.

Thanks Gene. I appreciate the comment.

Add to what's already been stated that the detail is quite sharp also. You had a great background for this handsome creature, and you used it very well.

Thanks Daniella, you're too kind. I shot a few frames of the coyote and this one is probably my favourite too for the same reasons you've already mentioned. As for Cape Breton Island, I think Alexander Graham Bell said it best when he referred to the "simple beauty" of the land. I do hope you get the opportunity to visit it some day soon.
