Park Warden closes down Benjies Trail

Cabot Trail, Cape Breton - Nova Scotia

This is the reason why you are not permitted to feed wild animals in Cape Breton Highlands National park. The Park Warden's truck is parked by the entrance to the Benjies Lake Trail. He was shutting down the trail [you can see the barricade] and it was closed for at least a few days afterwards as well. When I inquired at the Park office the girl called the Warden to find out why the Trail was being closed. When the answer came back: "Benjies Lake Trail closed due to an aggressive coyote", I knew the reason why. The day before the Warden closed the Trail people had been throwing food at the coyote and it was now probably going after other hikers for food too.

The coyote was going after hikers and was becoming such a nuisance that the wardens decided to take it down. They shot at it but never did find the body so it may have escaped but is a bit gun shy now.

Yes, many people don't realize the consequences of feeding wild animals even though they mean well.
