Pileated woodpecker

Eastern Ontario, Canada

Standing under this guy I had to watch out for flying wood chips. First they peck away. Then they get rid of the chips. Then they peck away again. Gid rid of some more chips. Between the pecking and clearing of chips they also look up at the sky around them watching and listening for signs of danger. Aperture-Priority, f/8, 1/160, EC -1/3, ISO 400. Canon 75-300 IS lens at 300mm. For more info on the Pileated woodpecker including sound go to: -- http://www.birds.cornell.edu/programs/AllAboutBirds/BirdGuide/Pileated_Woodpecker_dtl.html

Thanks Howard. Yes, they are huge. I saw quite a few of them this Spring. Easier to spot them too when the branches are bare in April and early May.

Nice capture! I saw one of these in the greenbelt beside Nortel for the first time recently. They're huge!

I approach when they're busy pecking away. They're too preoccupied to notice me then. They stop intermittenly to look around and listen for sounds.

Now how did you get that close. This has to be one of the most elusive birds I've ever encountered!
