A small nocturnal owl that blends in well with its surroundings. There are 2 colour morphs, the red and the gray. The gray has a habit of perching in open tree cavities particularly on sunny days...supposedly to soak up the sun.

I photographed it on an overcast day and it still perched in an open tree cavity. So, there goes that theory.

This particular screech owl has to be one of the most tame I have seen. It sleeps through just about anything. Occasionally, smaller birds like warblers and chickadees will come and harass it.
