McMaster at Queen's 20030920

Photos from game 4 - the Queen's University Golden Gaels vs. the McMaster University Marauders, September 20, 2003 at Richardson Stadium, Kingston, Ontario.

In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Golden Gaels repeatedly came back off the deck (as Tom Denison did after getting sacked 8 times), to take the lead at half time, and take the lead 27-20 with only 27 seconds to go in the game in what could have been the most thrilling win in Gaels history. But it was not to be, as on the ensuing kickoff, McMaster RB Jesse Lumsden returned the kick all the way for the tieing TD. In overtime, the Gaels had first possession but missed on a field goal afterwhich the Marauders then proceeded to make their field goal for a 30-27 OT victory.

The offense netted 449 yards, with Tom Denison good on 25 of 41 passes for 459 yards, notably to Iain Fleming (9 catches, 182 yards, 1 TD) and Craig Spear (8 catches, 174 yards, 1 TD). The running game which had achieved great success in the 3 prior games was only able to account for 42 yards on 14 carries, and Denison was the leading rusher. Chris Napoli was good on 4 field goals, the longest 51 yards, but also missed on 4 coming away with one single.

On defense, the Gaels held McMaster QB Jon Behie to only 13 completions on 31 passes for 237 yards, and held the vaunted McMaster running attack to 132 yards on 29 carries. Jack Gaudreau recorded a sack while Ryan Bechmanis and Nick Corneil had one pick each. The difference in the game was a combination of several untimely turnovers and the breakdown that led to the Marauders' final TD.

As a football spectacle, this game ranked up with the best ever, but losing in OT after seemingly having the game in hand was perhaps the most disappointing loss in recent memory. That said, the Gaels should go into the remainder of the season, and the next game against Mac, full of confidence.

Best wishes for a quick recovery go out to Coach Berk Brean.
