Pat Sheahan didn't sound like a coach who had just won a game by 29 points. "I'm OK," the Queen's Golden Gaels bench boss said when asked that timeless, probing question -- how are you? -- in the aftermath of a 42-13 victory over the host Windsor Lancers Saturday. "I'm happy about the victory, but it was not a clean game. Parts of it (were good). But there were a lot of mistakes in the game. There is some inconsistency we are seeing." If you're a Gaels fan, consider it a good thing that your team isn't altogether satisfied after a relatively one-sided triumph.

On a day when the Gaels (5-0) jumped into sole possession of first place in Ontario University Athletics and set a school record with a 15th consecutive regular season win, Queen's players and coaches all realized much work lies ahead to get the program where it needs to be heading into bigger, tougher games. The Gaels simply did what they were supposed to do after a shaky first half -- knock off the fading Lancers (2-3) with contributions from all three facets of the team.
Apart from the final result -- a big W on the same day previously undefeated Western suffered a stunning homecoming loss against visiting McMaster -- the afternoon didn't do a whole lot for a Gaels team that lacked crispness and chemistry for much of the outing. Credit the Gaels for rising up with a solid second half after letting the overmatched Lancers stay within five -- 15-10 -- through 30 minutes. But that elusive 60 minutes of strong football -- you can only read so much into a 67-0 victory over winless York last week -- remains the goal for the Gaels.

"I know we can play a lot better," Sheahan said. "They will be real attentive at practice because there are some things we didn't do too well." It should be noted that the Gaels did do some important things well. Start with quarterback Danny Brannagan, who has now thrown for more than 400 yards in each of the three games in which he has lasted more than one half this season.

The fifth-year quarterback, who would be a strong Hec Crighton candidate if he hadn't missed a good chunk of two games because of injury, had no trouble with the strong winds. With Windsor employing seven defensive backs, Brannagan didn't budge, throwing for 401 yards and two touchdowns with pinpoint accuracy for much of the day. If not for some drops by his receivers, the Gaels could have won by more. "I thought Danny was sensational," Sheahan said.

While the Gaels allowed a touchdown for the first time since the season opener, it came on a blocked Dan Village punt in the second quarter. Once again, the defence did not allow an opposing offence into the end zone, making it four games and counting for that touchdown-free streak. Windsor quarterback Daniel Carloni, starting in place of the injured Sam Malian, threw for just 39 yards and had no answers against an impressive Gaels defence.

There also was the return of Jimmy Allin to the end zone. After scoring three touchdowns on kick returns in the season opener, Allin was relatively quiet on special teams in the next three games before breaking out yesterday. His 50-yard punt return for a major in the third quarter was a huge jolt for a Queen's team that needed something big. It gave the Gaels a commanding 27-10 lead and Windsor never recovered.

In the tough-break department, running back Jimmy Therrien went down with a knee injury in the third quarter and is a definite question mark for next week. However, if there is such a thing as an injury coming at an OK time, this was it.

Fellow running back Marty Gordon made his season debut after sitting out since the first day of training camp with a nagging leg injury. He performed nicely, gaining 47 yards on eight carries, and looked like he was having a whole lot of fun, running and playing with zeal.
Expect the La Salle Black Knights graduate's workload to increase Saturday in Waterloo against the Warriors. "Marty played well," Sheahan said. "For his first game, I thought he had some jump." As a whole, the Gaels didn't have that same sort of jump. But, as Western showed Saturday, the favoured team doesn't always win the game. Queen's did do that without breaking a big sweat, meaning the Gaels can spend the week trying to work out some weaknesses while gearing up for stiffer competition.

Queen's Golden Gaels remain undefeated with win over Windsor - Gaels win school-record 15th regular season game in a row - Kingston Whig Standard

After a shaky first half, the Queen's Golden Gaels football team elevated its play and roared to a one-sided victory on Saturday. The Gaels (5-0) set a school record with their 15th consecutive regular season victory, a 42-13 triumph over the host Windsor Lancers.

Leading just 15-10 at halftime against a slumping Lancers team (2-3) playing without starting quarterback Sam Malian, Queen's looked much better in the second half. A 50-yard punt return touchdown by special teams ace Jimmy Allin was the big jolt for Queen's, putting the Gaels up 27-10. In the fourth quarter, Gaels quarterback Danny Brannagan hit Mark Surya for a 13-yard touchdown pass and Scott Valberg for a 51-yard catch-and-run major, putting the game out of reach.
Queen's gave up its first touchdown since the opening week of the season on a blocked punt in the second quarter by Jordan Brescacin. But the Gaels defence did not allow a major, extending its touchdown-free streak to four games.

Brannagan had a strong day, completing 25 of 41 passes for 401 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Queen's running back Jimmy Therrien left the game with a knee injury in the third quarter and will be listed as day-to-day this week. But fellow running back Marty Gordon made his season debut after missing the first half of the season with a leg injury and looked good, carrying the ball eight times for 47 yards.

Special teams leads Gaels to record-setting win over Windsor

The No. 4 Queen’s Gaels (5-0) won their team-record 15th straight game in the regular season as they defeated the Windsor Lancers (2-3) on their home turf by a score of 42-13 on Saturday afternoon. The game marked the 200th of Coach Pat Sheahan's career and his 119th victory. The win, coupled with Western's loss to McMaster leaves the Gaels as the only unbeaten team in the OUA, and in sole possession of first place.

The victory was highlighted by strong performances from the Gaels special teams, led by Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C., and Jimmy Allin of Belleville, Ont. Village accounted for 18 of the Gaels 42 points on the day while Allin returned his third punt for a touchdown of the season.

Despite the lopsided score, the first half was a closely contested affair. Field position was an important factor in the opening half thanks to a strong southerly wind. Queen’s led 5-0 after one quarter off of two rouges and a field goal from Village.

After a Windsor field goal brought them to within two points, QB Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. engineered a touchdown drive that was capped off by Thomas Howes of Parham, Ont., plunging in from one yard out on a 3rd and goal play.

However, the Lancers refused to go away and got a big play on special teams right before the half. Jordan Brescacin blocked a Dan Village punt with a minute to play and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown to make the score 12-10. Queen’s would responded with a late drive, capped off by a 31 yard field goal from Village to give the Gaels some breathing room going into the second half.

In the third quarter, the Gaels began to pull away as Village recorded another five points to stretch the lead to 10. Then, the Lancers made a mistake as they punted the ball right to Allin who scampered 51 yards for his third punt return touchdown on the season.

With a comfortable 27-10 lead, Brannagan hit Mark Surya of Burlington, Ont., and Scott Valberg of Kingston, Ont., for fourth quarter touchdowns to make the final 42-13.

On the day, Brannagan completed 25 of 41 passes for 401 yards and two touchdowns. Valberg led all Gaels receivers with seven catches for 162 yards and a touchdown. The defence has not allowed a touchdown since the first game of the season.

Queen’s will be on the road again next weekend as they battle the Waterloo Warriors in Waterloo. Kickoff is schedule for 1:00 pm.

Gaels face Lancers for first time in two years

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 30, 2009) – This weekend, the No. 4 Queen’s Gaels (4-0) will be on the road looking to keep their unblemished record intact as they take on the Windsor Lancers (2-2).
The meeting marks the first time in two years that the Gaels and Lancers have faced off against one another. In their last contest, Queen’s defeated Windsor by a score of 38-3 on their home field.

Queen’s is coming off a 67-0 win over the York Lions last weekend which represented their largest margin of victory this season. A big reason for the offensive explosion was the return of fifth year quarterback Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont. The reigning CIS Offensive Player of the Week threw for a career-best 543 yards and five touchdowns while running for another in three quarters of action. The shutout victory was the second in a row for the Gaels against York as they shutout the Lions a year ago 80-0.

Meanwhile, the Lancers are coming off two big losses to Western and Waterloo following a 2-0 start to their season. In those games, they have been outscored by their opposition 109-7. Last weekend against Waterloo, the Lancers failed to generate any offense without starting quarterback Sam Malian of LaSalle, Ont. as they fell 49-0.

Despite their struggles as of late, the Lancers have always posed a challenge to the Gaels and will be looking to put the last two games behind them. A veteran defensive core as well as a strong running game will be two things that Queen’s will have to overcome in order to leave Windsor with a victory.

When they last met on September 22, 2007, Brannagan threw for 358 yards and two touchdowns. 182 of those yards were to former Gaels receiver Rob Bagg while former Queen’s running back Mike Giffin ran for 120 yards on 22 carries.

Lancer Football looks to bounce back at home against Queen's on Saturday

The Lancer Football program will take to the field this weekend in a matinee match-up on Saturday against the #4 Queen’s Gaels.

The Lancers are looking to snap a two game skid, after a rough affair last week against the Waterloo Warriors on the road. The 2-2 Lancers will look to regain some momentum with home field advantage on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

Against Queen's, Coach Morencie's squad will need a solid defensive effort if they are to get a back into the win column. The challenge will be to slow down Queen’s quarterback Dan Brannagan, who currently sits third amongst quarterbacks in the OUA in passing.

The Lancer defence will also have to keep an eye on Queens’ receivers Blaise Morrison and Scott Valberg who have a combined 607 yards after four weeks of action.

After two tough weeks, Windsor will also need to see their running game bounce back. The duo of Paul Lefaive and Kamar Anglin have a combined 356 yards and they will need to be effective this week against Queen's if the offense is going to move the chains. They'll also need support from Derek Hymers who rushed for 69 yards last week in Waterloo.

Offensively, the Lancers will need to do a better job of getting the ball into the hands of deep threats Jordan Brescacin and Cory Fernandes. Both Brescacin and Fernandes have been consistent this year combining for 285 yards, and they provide solid down-field targets for the quarterback.

Kick-off is scheduled for 1pm this Saturday at Alumni Field. Saturday also marks the return of the Lancers’ annual Windsor Minor Football Day. All local minor football players who wear their team jerseys will receive free admission into the game. (Does this include the Lancers?)
