QUEEN'S 20, OTTAWA 8

GOLDEN GAELS DEFENCE SHINES IN WIN OVER OTTAWA
By Kingston Whig Standard

Queen's football team improves to 3-0

For the second week in a row, the Queen's Golden Gaels defence dominated a game to lead the team to a huge victory. With star quarterback Danny Brannagan out with a mild concussion, the Gaels defence delivered a much-needed sensational performance en route to a 20-8 win over the host Ottawa Gee-Gees Saturday at Frank Clair Stadium.

Brannagan's streak of 33 consecutive starts came to an end, but the Gaels (3-0) remained undefeated by making life miserable for the Gee-Gees offence. It was the second straight outstanding effort by the Gaels on defence. Queen's won 8-7 over the McMaster Maraduers last week.

Highly-regarded rush end Shomari Williams, who played the past three years at NCAA Division I Houston, made his debut for Queen's and was a force on run and pass defence. Williams was named the most valuable player of the game for Queen's after picking up two sacks.

Rookies Justin Chapedelaine, the starter, and Tom Howes rotated at quarterback for Queen's. Neither man posted huge numbers, but Chapdelaine grew more comfortable as the game went along and helped the team pick up some first downs.

The defence was the story, however. A great blitz by Queen's resulted in a hard hit on Ottawa quarterback Brad Sinopoli by linebacker Alex Daprato in the fourth quarter, resulting in a key fumble. The Gaels' Kyle MacDonald recovered at the Ottawa 31-yard line and Dan Village followed three plays later with a 31-yard field goal to give Queen's a nine-point lead.

Queen's running back Jimmy Therrien scored the lone touchdown of the game on a three-yard rush, putting the Gaels up 7-3 early in the second quarter. The undisciplined Gee-Gees took an astounding 55 yards of penalties on the touchdown drive. Queen's would not relinquish that lead.

Queen's has now won 13 games in a row in regular-season play. The Gaels play host to the lowly York Lions (0-3) next Saturday at Richardson Stadium.

DEFENCE LEADS THE WAY AS NO. 6 QUEEN’S DOWNS OTTAWA 20-8 - By Queen’s Athetics
No. 6 Queen’s Gaels captured its third win of the season on the strength of stingy defence edging the Ottawa Gee Gees 20-8 at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa.

Shomari Williams of Brampton, Ont., led the Gaels on the defensive side of the ball recording two sacks and a fumble recovery in his Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) debut. The Gee Gees turned over the ball eight times including four fumbles and three interceptions. Jimmy Allin of Belleville, Ont. recorded two interceptions while Joshua Sultana of Etobicoke, Ont., recorded one.

Jimmy Therrien of Montreal posted the game’s only touchdown with a two-yard run on the first play of the second quarter giving the Gaels an 7-3 lead at the time – one they would not relinquish. Therrien earned his second career 100-yard rushing effort posting 147-yards on 31 carries.

Queen’s was playing without fifth-year QB Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., who was held out the game due to a shoulder injury. Rookie Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C., and Tom Howes of Parham, Ont., shared quarterbacking duties with Chapdelaine seeing the majority of snaps. Chapdelaine completed seven passes for 52-yards.

Ottawa’s Bradley Sinopoli of Peterborough, Ont., threw for 156-yards completing 17 passes and three interceptions in 34 attempts. Steve Hughes of Ottawa was the game’s top receiver making four catches for 54-yards.

The Gaels defence was relentless holding the Gee Gee’s offence to 264-yards and only eight points. Over the past two games Queen’s has now held its opponents to eight points or less.

Queen’s moves to 3-0 on the 2009 season and are now 13-0 in the regular season dating back to October 2007. The Gee Gees fall to 1-2. Next week, the Gaels host the York Lions at Richardson Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00pm with tickets available by calling 613.533.2500.

NOTES: Earlier this week the CFL amateur scouting bureau announced Williams was ranked as the 8th top Canadian prospect. Williams is a transfer from the University of Houston and is pursuing his bachelor of education at Queen’s… Brannagan’s consecutive starting streak ends at 33 games. He had started every game since taking over the QB reins from Ali Clarkson in the second game of 2005 season… Saturday’s win was Queen’s first in Ottawa since 2002 when QB Tom Denison helped the Gaels to a 29-28 win… Attendance at Frank Clair Stadium was 2,056.

GEE GEES LOSE TO NO. 6 GAELS
By University of Ottawa Athletics

Despite scoring 45 points in last week's game against Waterloo, the Ottawa Gee-Gees were limited to just eight points on a pair of field goals and a safety as they lost to the No. 6 Queen's Gaels 20-8 on Saturday afternoon at Frank Clair Stadium in Week 3 OUA football action.

Ottawa (1-2) was plagued by untimely penalties, dropped passes and costly turnovers as they suffered their second loss in three games

The Gee-Gees lose at home to the Gaels (3-0) for the first time in four attempts dating back to 2002 stalling Denis Piché's bid for win number 40 as the Gee-Gees head coach.

uOttawa's all time record against Queen's is 59-51-5.

"We can run with the big boys we fell a little short on Saturday," said Piché.

"Our defence played well but we have to start making more plays and tidy up a few loose ends. We will have to start finding guys that can make plays when we need to."

Shomari Williams of Brampton, Ont., led the Gaels on the defensive side of the ball recording two sacks and a fumble recovery in his OUA debut. Jimmy Allin of Belleville, Ont. recorded two interceptions while Joshua Sultana of Etobicoke, Ont., recorded one.

Queen's was playing without fifth-year quarterback Danny Brannagan of Burlington, Ont., who was held out the game due to a shoulder injury. Rookie Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, B.C., and Tom Howes of Parham, Ont., shared quarterbacking duties with Chapdelaine seeing the majority of snaps. Chapdelaine completed seven passes for 52 yards.

Matthew Falvo was the only Gee-Gees player to get his name on the score sheet with kicks of 32 and 26 yards.

Ottawa had a 3-0 first quarter lead but the Gaels responded with 12 points in the second quarter.

Queen's running back Jimmy Therrien ran the ball in from Ottawa's three-yard line on the first play of the second quarter to give the Gaels a 7-3 lead.

The Gaels led 12-3 at the half then 12-6 after 45 minutes of play.

Ottawa quarterback Bradley Sinopoli finished the day 17-of-34 passing for 156 yards and three interceptions.

Jordan Wilson-Ross was the Gee-Gees leading rusher with 72 yards on 17 carries.

The Gee-Gees had 14 penalties for a total of 141 yards while Queen's were penalized 12 times for 115 yards.

Ottawa turned the ball over a total of eight times on four fumbles, three interceptions and one on downs.

Mike Cornell (Ottawa) and Shomari Wilson (Queen's) were named the game's MVP and were presented with the Mike O'Connor Award.

No. 6 Gaels hit the road to battle the Gee Gees - By Jamie Howieson, Queen's Athletics

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 16, 2009) – After opening the season with two wins at home, the sixth-ranked Queen’s Gaels travel to Ottawa for a showdown with the Gee Gees.

The matchup marks the first game between the two teams since last year’s OUA Semifinal when Ottawa upset the Gaels at Richardson Stadium. With revenge on their minds, Coach Sheahan’s squad will need a team effort to knock off the Gee Gees who are 1-1 after their first two games on this season.

Queen’s is coming off a hard-fought 8-7 win last week against the McMaster Marauders. The stars of the game included running back Jimmy Therrien, who racked up a career-high 181 rushing yards, as well as the entire Gaels defence. Led by Matt Vickers and rookie John Miniaci, Queen’s held the Marauders to a total of 158 offensive yards on the day. For their effort, Coach Sheahan gave the game ball to the entire defensive unit.

As for the Gee Gees, they are coming off their first win of the season against the Waterloo Warriors. Rookie running back Jordan Wilson-Ross recorded 232 yards on the ground and two touchdowns in Ottawa’s 45-11 win.

This week, the Gaels defensive unit should be even stronger with the addition of highly-touted transfer Shomari Williams. Williams, who comes to the Gaels from the University of Houston, sat out the first two games of the season due to eligibility restrictions. His presence will allow the Gaels front four to get more pressure on Gee Gees third year quarterback Brad Sinopoli. Sinopoli has been dangerous in his first full season as a starter racking up 569 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Fans are encouraged to come out and support the Gaels. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm at Frank Clair Stadium at Lansdowne Park. The Queen's Ottawa Alumni Branch is organizing a pre-game gathering at Patty's Pub, 1186 Bank Street, starting at 11:00am.
