QUEEN'S TO PLAY LAURIER FOR BRONZE; FALL TO McGILL 3-1 - Michael Grobe & Jamie Howieson

The Queen's Gaels will play for the bronze medal on Sunday after falling 3-1 to the top-ranked McGill Marletts at the CIS Women's Hockey Championship hosted by Wilfrid Laurier University.

The loss snaps Queen's impressive 12 game winning streak which included six overtime playoff contests prior to this match. The Gaels will meet Laurier in the bronze medal game set for 4:00pm on March 13.

“It was a great game, two really good teams, unfortunately we came out on the wrong end,* said Queen's head coach Matt Holomberg. “The difference being special teams today; I think half their shots came on the power play. Five-on-five, I was really happy with the way our girls played.”

Queen's captain Michelle Hunt echoed Holmberg's comments. “They're number one in the country. We had a game plan and I think we stuck to it,” said Hunt, a native of Mississauga, Ont. “It was difficult with the penalties we had because they have a great powerplay. In the end, I think our team played really well and we all gave it our all.”

Queen's surrendered two goals on the power play and 18 of McGill's 35 shots came with the Gaels shorthanded. Queen's tallied 14 minutes in penalties with eight coming in the first period alone.

Mel Dodd-Moher of Stittsville, Ont., was named Queen's player of the game for the second straight contest after turning aside 32 shots. This was the first time she had surrendered three or more goals since a 5-3 loss against Windsor on January 22. Coincidently, that game was also the last time the Gaels had registered a loss.

“I give Queen's a lot of credit they played us tough, they played us hard and they were in our face.” said McGill head coach Peter Smith.

With the game tied at one in the second period, McGill scored two goals within under three minutes to sink the Gaels gold medal hopes.

Jordanna Peroff of Keswick, Ont., was credited with the game winner after the puck bounced off several players putting the score at 2-1 at 5:30 of the second on the power play.

Alyssa Cecere of Brossard, Que., scored just two minutes and 43 seconds later on a four-on-two rush to finish the scoring at 3-1.

The Gaels got off to a rocky start taking an early penalty and then having McGill's Katia Clement-Heydra of St-Bruno-de-Montarville, Que., capitalize and put McGill up 1-0 only 1:23 into the game. The first year forward came from beside the net and beat Queen's Dodd-Moher on the far side.

The resilient Gaels got it right back on a marker from Kelsey Thomson of Martintown, Ont., who knocked down an errant McGill pass in the slot and fired into the top corner midway through the first period.

McGill played a puck possession game in the third frame, but the Gaels did get a few opportunities.

A smart read by Becky Conroy of Pembroke, Ont., while shorthanded, to steal the puck from goalie Charline Labonte of Boisbriand, Que., behind the net created a scoring chance, but Gillian Ferrari of Thornhill. Ont. slid in front of the McGill net to prevent the goal.

McGill generated multiple offensive chances of their own, but Dodd-Moher kept them off the board.

With the win McGill advances to the gold medal game for the fifth straight time while Queen's will play for their first CIS women's hockey medal in the bronze medal match. They will meet Laurier in that game, while StFX will battle McGill in the final. Alberta will play in the fifth place game against Manitoba at 12 noon on Sunday, March 13th. The bronze medal match will be played at 4 p.m. on Sunday and the gold medal game will be at 7:30 p.m.
