Ottawa (April 14, 2009) – Four members of the Queen’s Gaels are part of an 88 player contingent announced by the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), who will participate in the East West Bowl on Saturday, May 9, 2009.
Representing Queen’s in the seventh edition of East West Bowl are Toronto natives Chris Smith and Alex Deprato along with Devan Sheahan of Kingston, Ont. and Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C. All four players have been named to the East Roster
Smith and Daprato were key components of the Gaels 2008 defense which allowed only 116 points– ranking them third best in the nation. Smith, a linebacker, registered 20 total tackles along with 10 assists and one sack. Daprato, a defensive back, ranked fourth on the team in tackles with 25.5, he also registered a 94-yard interception return against Western on September 27, 2008.
On the offensive side of the ball, Queen’s will be represented by Sheahan who was the Gaels second top receiver in 2008. He collected 427 yards, averaging 15-yard per reception and scoring three touchdowns.
Village, will handle the kicking duties for the East squad. Last season the third-year kicker finished second in the country in points scored with 90.
Last spring in Hamilton, the East team put an end to a five-year losing streak with a 25-12 victory at Ronald V. Joyce Stadium. Thaine Carter of Nanaimo, B.C., Osie Ukwuoma of Mississauga, Ont., Danny Brannagan of Burlington and Dee Sterling of Kingston represented Queen’s in the 2007 East-West Bowl
The East West Bowl showcases – for the most part - CIS players who will be eligible for the 2010 Canadian Football League draft.
The East side is comprised of student-athletes representing schools from the Atlantic and Quebec conferences in addition to institutions from the Greater Toronto Area and Eastern Ontario. The West squad is made up of players from universities from the GTA, Western Ontario and the Canada West conference.
Glen Constantin, head coach of 2008 Vanier Cup champion Laval, will lead the East squad in London while Greg Marshall of the Western Ontario Mustangs will be in charge of the West team.
East West Bowl week gets under way Tuesday, May 5 with practices and training sessions. The East West Bowl banquet is set for Friday, May 8.
