Queen's at Windsor 20050917

Photos from game 3 vs. the Windsor Lancers at University of Windsor, September 17, 2005.

Inserting QB Ali Clarkson with about two minutes to play, and then scoring a touchdown and a two-point convert with 20 seconds left to play may have created some last minute excitement, but the final score: 27-24 for Windsor, flattered the Gaels after a whole afternoon of frustration, turnovers, untimely penalties and missed assignments. On a September day in Ontario when miraculous comebacks did happen (Western over Mac), and Toronto almost broke their loss streak only to lose in OT to York, Queen’s had plenty of chances to pull something out of the fire. However, heretofore hero Danny Brannagan had a day to forget. Trying to cope with ankle-high snaps from the shot-gun, and Windsor pressure, he put up 3 picks plus 201 yards passing, completing 10 of 27. Together with several other team miscues this left the Gaels on the seriously short-end of the turnover equation. All of this nullified some fine individual performances including: Brad Smith’s 6 receptions for 163 yards and 2 TD’s, Mike Giffin’s 125 yards rushing, and Alex Vanags’ 3 receptions for 55 yards and 1 TD.

On defense, Queen’s was hampered by the loss (before and during the game) of several key players through injury, and fell victim to Daryl Stephenson’s 245 yard rushing performance which was complemented by timely short passes from Windsor QB Jon Dent who was only good on 14 of 25 for 113 yards, the longest 13 yards, but was good when he needed to be, and 4 FG’s from Kevin Reider. Leading the way for the Gaels D were Kirby Calvert with 6 solo tackles plus 1 assist and an interception, Mike Patone (5+2), Ian Hazlett (4+2) and Mike Botting (4+1).

The Gaels had the long trip back to Kingston and another week to lick their wounds before suiting up for the Homecoming game on September 24 against the tough (and old OQIFC rival) Ottawa Gee Gees.
