In the first visit to Western's TD Waterhouse Stadium, and the first visit to London since 1979, the Gaels played a waiting game before coming alive in the second half in a 47-35 come-from-behind win over the Stangs.
Despite being outpassed by Western's Chris Hessel, Tom Denison threw for 330 yards and 4 touchdowns and led a balanced attack with the the Gaels outrunning the Stangs 182-179 yards and winning where it counts: on the scoreboard. Queen's six total TD's were scored by Iain Fleming, Michael Navo, Mike Hendry (2) and Craig Spear (2). Spear and Andrew Joyner had big days with 8 and 5 catches for 118 and 108 yards respectively. On the ground, Michael Navo had a 78 yard TD run and also a 47 yard kickoff return.
On the defensive side of the ball, Jack Gaudreau had a pick and 2 sacks and Marc Mitchell picked up another interception; both guys also recorded 6 tackles. Dave Brown and Michael Navo each recovered Western fumbles.
A week after Western Head Coach Larry Haylor set a new CIS record for coaching wins, it was great to allow him to savour that milestone (without adding to it) for an additional week! Queen's also established a record as the only team with a winning record against Western. We are now 39-38-2, including four straight wins since rejoining the OUA.
Congratulations to the Bands, football parents and other fans who endured a two-hour delay on the 401 just getting to the game.
