Kohala, the oldest part of Hawaii

Trip from Kona to Kohala, the oldest Volcano on Hawai'i, Jan. 2007 and Jan. 2008
Kohala is the by far oldest volcano on Hawai'i (The Big Island). By estimation it surfaced approx. half a million years ago, erupted last about 120 thousand years ago. It is dormant now, dwarfed by the two better known giants Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea. Kohala is much smaller than the dangerous and swelling in size Hualalai, and surely not so spectacular like the visitors magnet, the regularly erupting Kilauea.

This "old land" of Kohala has naturally developed regular soil and an ancient looking foliage. Many of the fertile rolling green hills of Kohala are a part of the historic Parker Ranch, which shaped so much the history of this Island. This gallery shows:

  • Landscape along the Route 19 leading from Kona alongside slopes of Hualalai and Mauna Loa. Vast lava fields are decorated by countless Coral Graffiti.
  • Route 270 from Kawaihae alongside Kohala to Hawi with a stop at the Lapakahi Historical Park.
  • A few impressions from Hawi and Kapa'au. Hawi has revitalized itself and is a true perfect destination for a stop 'en route' to Pololu. We even noticed a new shop with home made specialties added between 2007 and 2008. One incredible place to stop and to eat is the Bamboo Restaurant and Gallery in Hawi. Their chef is a passionate cook preparing masterpieces, which lack the "outrageous Maui pricing" which we remembered all too well from Maui. See for yourself.
However, before going for a lunch to Hawi, check their schedule! On our trip one year later in Jan. 2008 we stood in front of closed doors...
  • Follow Route 270 past Kapa'au to transition from the dry side of Kohala to the windward side. This changes the landscape into wet lush variety, resembling to road to Hana. Apparently one problem might be parking in Pololu Valley, this calls for a solution!
  • Route 250 from Hawi to Waimea, leading across rolling green hills of Kohala to the "Paniolo Town" where the Parker Ranch was founded.
  • Route 190 from Waimea to Kona, which leads across highlands of the saddle between Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa toward bay of Kailua-Kona. It is truly a "moon landscape"...
  • Town of Kawaihae at dusk: Nothing of interest there for a visitor really, unless you would be interested in recent history and want to study results of a late cold war Project Tugboat (1969/1970). It was a nice coincidence that we have stumbled across a final event of a Wood Show held at Harbor Gallery, clearly one of the best art galleries in all of Hawaii.
