Aloha Festival, Honolulu, 19.Sep.2003

Aloha Festival in Waikiki, September 19 2003
An official ceremony at the Iolani Palace traditionally opens the statewide Aloha Festivals. Dressed in royal garments the Royal Court makes its procession following main streets in Honolulu.

The Royal Courts are represented by historical societies of native Hawaiians, who elect among themselves mo'i and mo'i wahine (King and Queen) on each Island.

On September 19 we witnessed festival celebration in Waikiki. Kalakua Avenue was closed for a big night party. Events of the day were:

  • Landing of the Royal Court at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel, Hula Greetings
  • Music Performances and Block Party along the Kalakaua Avenue

Great pictures.
One comment. Take a close look at the "hula girls" Notice none are Hawaiian? That is, pure, or with mostly Hawaiian blood? If you look closer, most are Japanese, Chinese, or Filipinas. Being from Hawaii, and *not* having a drop of Hawaiian blood, we always chuckled when haoles thought Filipinas, for example, were Hawaiians. 'Course, there's nothing wrong with that, for as you know there are very few pure Hawaiians left. And because the Islands are populated with (last count) more than 1/3 Asian population, you expect this. Sadly, it won't be long when there are no pure Hawaiian people left. Asians, especially Japanese who tend to marry within their own race, will eventually be the majority.
Oh, a question. Looking at the street scenes I notice there is no transit lane anymore. The lane on the Mauka side of Kalakaua used to run Ewa while the other lanes ran one-way Diamond Head. I was a cop there many years ago and enjoyed stopping tourists when they drove on the transit lane (it was illegal to use the lane) and asking what type of bus they were driving. :-) So I guess the transit lane is gone, eh? Where do the busses run now? Do they run Diamond Head with regular traffic?
