Ubehebe

Death Valley, California

Ubehebe Crater was formed when magma from deep in the earth rose through a fault, heating up groundwater and causing a massive steam-powered explosion...the dark layer over the exposed bed-rock is one of cinders from that event...a recent study suggests that this took place as little as 800 years ago, and that the potential is there for a similar occurrence in the future

this shot taken by Sam gives a better idea of the huge size of the crater: http://www.pbase.com/pegsam/image/162399843

Spectacular lighting, colors and clarity in this phenomenal capture David. I like how you composed this image and how the layers appear nicely compressed. The depth in this image is exceptional as it the image itself. VVV+++

Marvelous with this side light. I don't think it would be good to be around when it goes off again. ~V~

What a striking composition with that well-detailed diagonal running through the frame, making a very effective frame for the mountains in the distance.

What a great D of Field. It is amazing. We were out there two years, ago. It was about this time. There was hardly any snow up in the mountains. You guy's luck out, this year.

More remarkable formations. They look almost like the skin of an elephant in some respects. Fantastic image. V

Beautiful color and the image shows well all the variety of rock and the angular edge of the crater contrasted with the blues and whites of the mountains. ~BV~
