The following are photos taken while hiking along the spectacular canyon system of the West Fork Trail of Oak Creek, Arizona. Elevation is about 5500 feet. The system is surrounded by colorful red walls of Coconino Sandstone, soaring straight upwards hundreds of feet. A gently flowing stream runs the entire length of the trail. There is a wide range of lush vegetation including towering ponderosa pines, Douglas firs, box elder, cottonwood, velvet ash, Az. walnut, big tooth maple, willows and Gambel oak. Smaller vegetation includes Columbine, wild grape, Az. rose, lupines, sumac, Virginia creeper and asters, to name a few. Just before starting out on the trail, one will pass the ruins of Mayhews Lodge, which was a hunting and fishing lodge built in the early 1900s. The shallow cave in the red rock was their cold storage area. With it's history and truly breath-taking scenery, this tranquil canyon trail is a personal favorite among places to hike in Arizona. My pics don't begin to do it justice, but I hope you enjoy them just the same!
