(My apologies up front - most of these pictures were taken late in the day and I've had to "fix" them through a photo editing program. Many are not my best work and I'm frankly a little embarassed to put these up, but they're the only ones I have of Nikko so I had to use them. Sorry!)

A few shots from our quick but lovely trip to Nikko. We arrived late in the afternoon and most things were closing down, so we were unable to see some of the "must see" sites there, but we had a great time regardless. Nikko is worth a day or two at least if you can.

 The wood barrel (what you don't see underneath) is covered with colorful straw matting. We saw lots of displays like this nearly everywhere in Japan. Each barrel had a unique picture or drawing on it. You can see sake barrels in the Kyoto gallery. Here's a tid bit of information on sake barrels here: http://www.kikumasamune.com/taru_E/.

We saw lots of displays like this nearly everywhere in Japan. Each barrel had a unique picture or drawing on it. You can see sake barrels in the Kyoto gallery.

 These little creature would sometimes be sitting on the eves of the temples. They're just too great not to capture!

It marks the boundary to something sacred and can be found on torii gates, around sacred trees and stones, etc. A rope similar to the shimenawa is also worn by yokozuna, the highest ranked sumo wrestlers, during ritual ceremonies.
