I would say the best way to take in a country as different and varied as Japan is, is to view it season by season. Japan is a land of four very distinct seasons, which define the landscape, the timing of festivals, and what foods are eaten. Even certain fishes are eaten in season, as they swim in nearby waters.
There are other traditions that complicate this, including an ancient one that says Japan has 12 seasons- such is the sublety of weather. Yet for simplicity's sake, I decided to stick with the 'classic' four!
As you see these photos, please imagine the sensuality involved- a cool breeze on an otherwise hot day, the smell of a baked sweet-potato in the middle of winter. It is these things that bring the wonderful land of Japan to life. A beauty that can be tasted, as well as seen.
