The seminal image of Japan and a timeless source of beauty, Mt Fuji can be seen from many a high point as far away as Tokyo, on a clear day. She is the 'axis mundai' of Japan- the core of her universe. If you remember that Japan is a sequence of volcanic islands that once, long ago, emerged from the ocean's murky depths- then the peak of Mt Fuji, being the highest point, was the first point to do so.
Even today, many Japanese people keep a picture of Mt Fuji on their walls and point in her general direction when praying. This isn't neccessarily 'mountain worship', but a natural tendency to seek the strong, healing energy that can be felt here. She is Japan's first and most enduring sacred site- and can be a source of inspiration for us all, Japan's holy mountain.
