Aside from the famous one in Sapporo City, there are various other snow festivals in Hokkaido, Japan. I visited with two friends and we made our way to as many of them as we could in a few days time, carefully timing our trip to get the right trains- not easy when some areas only had two a day!
The ones pictured here are the main one in Sapporo, which had many enormous sculptures made with the help of the JSDF (Japanese Self-Defence Forces) and one at night in Chitose, which we road a minibus from our hotel down to see. This one had a wonderful atmosphere, with new-age music and ice castles that you could climb up and slide down. The lack of barriers and the small, friendly crowd also helped make this a very memorable experience.
