Free translation - of a letter of Washington (USA) to Rochambeau (France) dated 10th of May 1783
as it appears in French under the statue of Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau, Marechal de France, located in Paris, on Place Rochambeau, XVIth arrondissement.
The original, if it was written in English, must have sounded approximately like this :
"That independance, for which we have fought, and which we have obtained after a severe conflict of 7 years, must be attributed to a large extent to the generous help of your Nation and to the courage of your troops".
