Sunk in 1853 the Bwllfa Colliery passed through many owners and although all the colliery buildings have long been demolished the original coal owner's house remains. The image shows just how close the house is to the pithead, presumably that the owner could keep an eye on his workers. Perhaps the best known of the owners were the Llewellyn family, Sir Harry Llewellyn rode 'Foxhunter' to the gold medal at the 1952 olympic games. Dai Llewellyn became a Tory MP (typical right wing politics of old coal owners).
