The City of Newark, New Jersey is the State's largest city and a very urban/industrial place. Surprisingly, it had the foresight more than 100 years ago to buy up more than 35,000 acres of prime lakes, bogs and forests in Northwest New Jersey (primarily Passaic County) to guarantee a steady drinking water supply for its citizens. That land was preserved in an undeveloped state and is now the subject of conservation easements that will keep it undeveloped in perpetuity. It remains one of the outdoor gems of New Jersey's Highlands, and a great place for hiking, nature observation and photography.
