I spent a week of vacation on a medium-sized pond in a remote area of Orange County, New York in August 2012. The property had quite a variety of animals (bugs, mammals, reptiles) and plants, as well as beautiful scenery. Although I saw a number of black bears, I wasn't quick enough to get a photo before they ran away. I was told that there were rattlesnakes and spent most of the week trying to find one. On my last day, on a remote rocky slope, I came within 2 steps of stepping on a timber rattlesnake in the low brush covering the slope, before its loud rattle warned me away. I didn't get a photo of the entire snake, but did get a snap of its rattle (see below).
