Welcome to my photo galleries. Most of my photos were taken in New Jersey, although there are photos from other places in the United States, and several foreign countries.

Photography fascinates me because it enables me to see the many details of life that my eyes alone miss. By fixing fleeting details and preserving them for closer examination, a photograph enables a fuller appreciation of the wonders of the ordinary as well as the extraordinary. As Dorothea Lange put it, the photograph "proves to us how little our eyes permit us to see." One of William Faulkner's observations on writing also expressed this idea well: "The aim of every artist is to arrest motion, which is life, by artificial means and hold it fixed so that a hundred years later, when a stranger looks at it, it moves again." (The Paris Review, Spring 1956). I have no pretensions that my photos will be around in 100 years, or that they can move anyone other than me, but I constantly marvel at the power of photography to "arrest motion."

Most of the photos here from 2013 and earlier were taken with a Panasonic Lumix GH2, a micro four thirds "mirrorless" camera. At just over two pounds, the camera plus a Panasonic 100-300mm zoom lens is light enough to carry on long hikes with ease. This camera worked very well for me and it was a difficult decision to upgrade to a DSLR, but as of 2014 I'm now using a Canon 70D with the 400mm f/5.6 prime lens, as I wanted to be able to get better bird-in-flight shots. I suspect that the GH2 with the 20mm pancake lens will still be my go-to camera for city and other travel, as its performance in Paris in Dec. 2013 was excellent.

Enjoy, and please do leave comments if you see something you like.
