De stad kreeg al in 1283 stadsrechten. Vanwege de positie op de grens van Holland en Sticht Utrecht
kreeg het veel strijd te verduren. Al in 1402 belegerden de troepen van Jan van Arkel de stad. De oorlog tegen
Lodewijk XIV, in de 17e eeuw, was de reden voor de aanleg van vestingwerken volgens het
verbeterde Oud Nederlands vestingstelsel. Tientallen panden werden hiervoor gesloopt.
In 1697 werd de het stadhuis gebouwd, over de haven heen, met eronder de inundatiesluis. In 1795 veroverden
de Franse troepen, onder leiding van Daendels en Pichegru Nederland, en verloor de vesting zijn functie.
Tijdens de watersnoodramp van 1809 en die van 1820 boden de vestingwallen bescherming tegen het hoge water.
Tijdens de vijftiger en zestiger jaren raakten diverse gebouwen in verval. In 1973 werd gestart met restauraties die in 1998 werden voltooid.

In the 13th century, the current location of the fortress Nieuwpoort was created by Lord Van Liesveld and Lord Van Langerack.
The two lords wanted a settlement and in 1270, they both gave some of their property to make this happen. In 1283, the fortress
was given the privilege of a town. After a turbulent genesis with lots of sieges and devastation, with the 17th century more peaceful
times started. The city ramparts saved the city from floods in 1809 and 1820. Due to an economical crisis in the 1930s and World War II,
the city decayed. In 1970, the Provinciale Staten of South Holland initiated a reconstruction and restoration of the fortress and the city.
This work was finished in 1998. Nieuwpoort was a separate municipality until 1986, when it became part of Liesveld.
