The Sao Chaliang, เสาเฉลียง, stone formations are the result of natural sculpturing of two sandstone layers of differing resistance to weathering. The layers were deposited at the bottom of a sea in the Cretaceous Period; the thinner, more resistant top layer approximately 130 million years ago and the thicker soft layer approximately 180 million years ago. Both layers contain shells of ancient mollusks, indicating that the deposits were laid down in a shallow sea. Most of the sculpting was probably done during dryer eras when windblown sand ate away at the softer under layer of stone.

ของหินทรายนั้นง่ายต่อการสึกกร่อนกว่าหินชนิดอื่นที่จัดอย่ในลุ่มหินชั้นเด้วยกัน
และเมื่อ ผ่านการสึกกร่อนไปใด้ระยะหนึ่งก็มีสิ่งที่เรียกว่า 
"กระบวการต้านทานทางธรรมชาติ" และแรงกดทับขอเม็ดฝนทำให้หินรายแข็งยิ่งขึ้น
เป็นผลให้สามารถรักษาสภาพให้คงรป ได้ดังที่เห็นอยู่ในทุกวันนี้ "เสาเฉลียง"
