Piranesian Visions

These images are experiments in relating photographic space to the romanticist interpretation of historic traces recorded by GB Piranesi in the 18th Century. Employing digital editing tools, I have taken the liberty of testing my own ”interpretation-of-an-interpretation” of imaginary spaces, merging my own photographs –inspired by Piranesi’s vision of history- with an attempt at referencing their original language and expression found in his etchings. It is an attempt to reframe these archaeoligical places as spaces for the imagination and not just as a register of history.

Piranesi’s deviation from recorded “fact” via his own interpretative license as seen in his engravings is very similar, at least in concept, to the idealized spatialities that I have pursued through the use of the photographic frame. I have discovered my own understanding of photography to be more romanticist than documentarian; as much of the imagination as it is of a particular “reality”. GS.
