Alsion - I think the plan to remove the permanent floodwall came with a plan that used a new, mobile wall that can be set up during flooding.

My father survived the 1937 flood. He was a farmer in S.E.Mo. He had to let the team of work horses loose and they swam to higher ground . He was a great athlete or he would not have made it. He told us that they did blow levees below us to relieve the pressure. Today our farm is surrounded by drainage ditch , father donated the land ---which proved to be to our advantage.

Watching all the news on the flood; I feel so much emotion for all the many people that have lost homes, jobs, and more during this horrible and difficult time. I hope and pray that all involved in this tragedy have a strong belief in God. He really is the
only one that will always be there for them. I pray for them now.

I heard over the last few years that the Mayor of Paducah wanted to do away with the floodwall to improve the looks of downtown Paducah. Think he has changed his mind now???????????

My mother was a Paducah teenager during the 1937 flood and now she's almost 90 years old and experiencing flooding equal to that flood, but this time there are flood gates and dirt berms to help hold back the swollen river(s). Although I live in Oregon (high and dry), it is great viewing these detail photos of areas flood scenes from Smithland to Metropolis. Thanks for great photo journalism.

I read a book called "Long Knife" by Alexander Thom, about George Clark from the early 1800's describing the flood during the US campaign which eventually got us the Louisiana Territory. This is the flood of our time which so visually brings those scenes to mind. God bless all those in this tremendous tragic event. We all need to chip in and help support those efforts to provide basic needs now and recovery hopefully coming soon.

I have a friend from my childhood I love a lot lived next store to me when I was a child her name Judy Swicegood Looper I got a email today aboiut her someidiot put it in spam I tried to retreve it dissappeared . She lives in Livingston Tennessee the mother of 5 kids haven't seen her in yearrs was going to go see her last year got busy and didn't get there good person great friend more like family then friend I hate it if she died .

Grew up in Metro and have been living in Richmond, VA since 82. I actually heard a live report on the flooding in Metropolis on a national newscast as I was driving into work yesterday. I rememeber canoeing over flooded farmer's fields when I was in HS (with David Cartwright!)but certainly don't remember anything this bad!

I went to high school in Metropolis, IL. I've been in FL for the past 37 years, but still have family in Metropolis and Western KY. I spent many weekends in Smithland, KY with my Grandmother when I was a child. My Dad had to move out due to flooding in Calvert City, Ky and doesn't know when he'll be able to return. I can't be there, but your great photos tell the story of suffering beyond my comprehension.

I grew up near the Shooter's site and was really interested in those photos and others along that side of the river between Paducah and I-24. It is hard to imagine from the ground, but you give us full insight into the extent of the flooding. I hope you do one more flight today or tomorrow since that is the crest (hopefully). You are recording history!

Really good pictures. I grew up in Lone Oak and left Paducah in 1967. I have pictures of my Dad in a boat in the flood of 1937. He spoke of that flood many times. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people affected by this flood.

wonderful pictures yet sad. just came back from pirates cove resort at johnathan creek. the flooding is unbelievable around the boat dock, campgrounds and beach area.

Thanks for the pictures. I took my first boat ride in 1937 too in Harrisburg, IL. I was less than a year old at the time, so I don't remember it, but I remember being told about it. Our Disaster Relief volunteers are working in the Metropolis area, sandbagging and serving hot meals. (Check us out at Illinois Baptist Disaster Relief on Facebook.)

I am sorry to see all of the flooding in familiar places. We, too, here in Mississippi are expecting the worst flood since 1937. I often heard my dad speak of that one.
