This is a beautiful ride on Route 60 from the town of Superior, Arizona to the Top of the World just before coming to the mining town of Miami. Before driving past Superior, I took the time to walk through "Old Superior" and found many deserted businesses and streets. Mining was very big in Superior since around 1900 with mine shafts extending 3000 feet deep into the earth. Now, with the recent increased value of copper, many of these mines are reopening, now profitable.
Past Superior, are the magnificent Superstitions, which are of volcanic origin with tuff (volcanic ash welded together) creating unusual formations. The road climbs to nearly 5000 feet with mountains approaching 8000 feet on either side. The trip includes a tunnel drive and follows a parallel path of a long abondoned original route down at the valley floor.
