Historic Pinal Cemetary, Superior, Arizona

The historic Pinal Cemetery, ca. 1880 to approximately 1920, served the residents of Pinal, AZ and the mill workers from the Silver King Mine. Following the mine closure in 1888, Pinal was abondoned but the cemetery was still used by the residents of a new copper camp, Superior. With the establishment of Superior’s own cemetery in 1916, use of the Pinal Cemetery was discontinued. Of notable interest are the remains of Wyatt Earp's second wife "Mattie" who died of a laudanum (opium, morphine and codeine) and alcohol overdose in 1888 which was ruled as a suicide. Most of the graves are unmarked with a total number at about two - three dozen. Since 1916, The US Forest Service has managed the cemetery which is located about 4 miles north of AZ60 on Forest Road 229 and 8.
