Pandanus spiralis or Screw Palm

Ubirr art site complex, Kakadu NT

These distinctive trees enjoy growing where they can get their feet wet and are usually associated with swamp margins and drainage
lines where they sometimes form forests. The leaves are well armed with spikes along the margins and the close foliage provides
shelter for a wide range of animals. The fruit are eaten by a variety of creatures including Sulphur-crested cockatoos- these birds
even fly short distances with the fruit in their beaks, but as they tire rapidly there is always the danger of being brained by an errant, falling pandanus nut.
