It was wet under foot, the wind was blustery and the cloud ceiling was low when my friend Llion, Bruce of the Baskervilles and I headed for the mystical and ancient site of Bryn Cader Faner. Starting from near Ty'n Twll, Trawsfynydd and finishing approximately 7 miles and 6 hours later above Merthyr Farm, Harlech. There are many hut circles, cairns and standing stones along the route a testament to the area's antiquity. Despite the introduction about the weather this was an excellent and very rewarding hike which I'll remember for a long time!
Bryn Cader Faner is a prehistoric cairn circle dating back about 4,000 years. It is without doubt one of the most impressive (and hardest to get at!) prehistoric sites in Wales. It is unique in the way that the stones all cant outwards. The original circle comprised approximately 30 stones, unfortunately only 15 now remain, this was due to soldiers removing them during military training excercises shortly after 1939. The circle was reported as being complete during an inspection in 1914, but that the central part where the cist would have been had been destroyed, probably by treasure hunters.
