Several times each year, particulary in September and October, Southern California experiences "Santa Ana Winds," which blow the inland air and contaminates over the ocean. The orange and red sky is the result of light passing through smog. Two additional elements in this photo make it special. On rare occasions, commercial fishing boats can be found trolling off Laguna Beach. Additionally, the mountain in the background is Catalina Island, which is usually obscured by coastal haze.
