The southern part of the Vienna Woods is peppered with quarries, many of them existing since the late Middle Ages. The growing city of Vienna demanded lime stone and marble for builing new houses, churches and palaces.
Now most of these quarries are abandond, leaving back deep wounds in the side of the hills and once in while a quiet little lake or pond on the the bottom. Nature is regaining now these sometimes remote areas.
