The Kieneck (1106m/3600ft.) is located in the foothills of the Alps near Furth a./d. Triesting in Lower Austria/Austria, and is a 40 min. car ride away from our home.
Our hike started on a nice and warm, but not too hot day in June from the little village of Furth (422m/1380ft).
The first 7km/4.3ml of the trail follow a small road winding through meadows, passing small settlements and farm houses, with almost no gain in altitude.
The next 2.2km/1.4ml is the hard part, because you have to climb a rather steep path all the way up to the summit. Good thing that you are under tree cover, and a cool breeze dries your sweaty face!
On top of the Kieneck is a very nice "Berghuette", where you can relax and have a few cool drinks and some lunch while enjoying the panoramic view.
Now the trail follows the top of a long ridge for about 4km/2.5ml, still being at an altidude of approx. 1000m/3300ft, although there are some steep "ups and downs" in between.
The last 5.5km/3.4ml are a slow decline back to Furth, where the car is already waiting for you, ready to take you back home after a 6h hike ( without the breaks).
