Antares - Rho Ophiuchi region

Antares - Rho Ophiuchi region

This is one of the most splendid and colorful areas in the sky. The upper left part is dominated by Antares, a luminous red supergiant. Its yellow-redish light is reflected by nearby dust (IC4606/vdB107). The small globular cluster NGC6144 is at the 4 o'clock position and the big globular cluster M4 is at the 6 o'clock position. At the lower edge of the image the outer parts of SH2-9, an emission nebula, and vdB104, a blue reflection nebula can be seen. IC4605/vdB108 is the blue reflection nebula near the middle of the upper edge of the image. One third from the right a nicely structured reflection nebula (IC4603/vdB105) with interlaced dust can be seen. IC4604/vdB106 is the bright blue reflection nebula around Rho Ophiuchi near the right edge of the image.
