The Hungry Ghost Festival is on the fifteenth day of the seventh moon in the Lunar calendar. It's a time to offer sacrifices to ghosts who are being taken care of by no one.
In Kwun Tong in Hong Kong, the local community set up this special event for the Hungry Ghosts. It included Chinese opera performance and would later mean giving out rice free to the poor. Paper oferings will be burned to the dead. In this case, special Chiu Chow cakes have also been made.
It's said that during the first and the 30th day of the seventh moon, the King of Hell will open the gates of hell so the ghosts can wander the earth. Those with no descendants or who had not been buried properly will be resentful. The offerings are to guarantee safety and good luck. After the end of the seventh moon, the ghosts return to hell.
