Notre Dame Convent

Leipzig, Saskatchewan

"The digging began on May 31, 1927. On July 24, when the cornerstone laying ceremonies were held, the basement and the first storey were nearly complete. His Excellency, the Bishop, laid the cornerstone. All the priests of the colony as well as a large crowd of people from the whole territory were present at the ceremony."

"By December 28, the new convent was nearly ready for the Sisters to move in. The first Mass was celebrated in the Convent chapel the next day. A few days later, after the Christmas holidays, 56 children arrived to take up residence in the magnificent building."

Love this old building, brings back many memories, used to play hide and seek in there when we were kids. My Mom went to school there. My Dad was born and raised in Leipzig. My Grandpa-Henry Franke (a.k.a. Hiney) ran the Co-op store there forever.

Hello, I have some old photographs from my grandmother's effects including one of a building under construction. When I put the snapshot in my scanner and blew it up I saw that there was a name of "Notre Dame Convent" on the building. Thanks to "Google" I was able to find your site. My grandfather was a master bricklayer and stonemason and I know he worked in or near Regina in the 1920's. Could he have worked on this building, perhaps even as foreman? Are there any records that can be checked to tell me about his work there? I have been researching my family genealogy for many years and would appreciate the information. My maternal grandfather's name was Philip Edward Short. He was known as Ed Short. Thanks in advance.
